I am writing this long after the original post and therefore will probably never be seen. I am 85 yo. and am a crusty old man but I think my opinion is nevertheless valid.In my young days, cricket was divided, perhaps informally, between 1st class cricket, league cricket, village cricket and school cricket . The gods of cricket played for their county team in 3 or4 day matches with 2 innings each side. Both batting and bowling were of a very high standard, to the extent that it was a pleasure to watch experts in each branch pit their skills against each other sometimes for days on end. Scoring rate was sometimes unimportant if the wicket was particularly difficult but survival was sublime. Especially if the batsman was a Yorkshireman and the bowler was Lancastrian.Or even the other way around.League cricket was played, especially in Yorkshire and Lancashire as what we would now call limited over cricket. It was an exciting version of the game played by often retired 1st. class cricketers. Even so , it was a lower version of the sport. There was no time for the greater skills of either batting or bowling.Village and school cricket were for cricket lovers of youth and middle age who loved the sport but had few if any aspirations to greatness.Oh how I long for the days when we rushed from school each evening to the county ground to watch a dogged batsman surviving 2 days against a skilful bowling team on a poor batting wicket. The score didn’t matter but the skills displayed were sublime.1st class cricket is dead. RIP

Also, eclipse isn't even on here and more people use xcode than that.

There’s an insight at Exeter that was said when I was there: “You have a better chance of getting into Harvard than if you’d have never attended.”He’s looking at all the suckers who didn’t get in :)In reality, the question’s assumption of many Harvard acceptance now isn’t the case. Actually, quite far from it. Out of around 300 kids who graduated with me, how many would you expect to be accepted into Harvard? 40? 60? Maybe you heard it was high so you expect 50?The answer (from my memory) is 6 students. That’s less than 2% of the class. In other words, it ’s a rounding error.But how is that possible? Why can it be so low when everyone says it’s so high?Well, I don’t blame you. A lot of kids (or their parents on behalf of the kids) apply to Exeter with the mistaken belief that this is the golden ticket to get into the “small liberal arts school in Cambridge, Mass.”Most likely, Exonians (students at Exeter) end up with a letter like this:Note: This is a satirical letterIf I have to think of some reasons for this trend, one reason is Harvard trying to distance itself from the reputation of having a “feeder” school like a boarding school such as PEA (Phillips Exeter Academy). There are multiple other schools that are better if you want to get into Harvard than to go into PEA since Harvard is trying to break away from the stereotype of PEA => Harvard.Don’t get me wrong. Exeter is a wonderful education that cannot be compared to many other places in the world. People from diverse backgrounds are going to be there, and many will study and follow their intellectual curiosity to do amazing projects.On the con side, if you’re surrounded by extraordinary people, then you’re going to have to be sublime to stand out within that crowd. The top of the top are the only ones who have a chance to get in, and even then acceptance isn’t guaranteed.Of course, back in the day things were different. The college counselors were called college placers since they would tell you which school you would go to. But this was 30 years ago, and nowadays the situation is different. Before, it may have been a feeder school, but since that truth is disappearing, you only should think of it as a place to hone an amazing education.In short, do things that will surround you with people that help you grow. Don’t do things because it’s a stepping block. Nothing is guaranteed, and I know this isn’t going to answer this question, but as Bob Dylan said, “The times, they are a changin'”.
