PDF Editor FAQ

Do Brazilians like that they speak Portuguese?

I LOVE speaking Portuguese! It is one of the six richest languages in the world, and we get to learn it as mother tongue so all its variations and details are natural.I speak fluently other 2 languages and have been studying 3 more. 6 total so far, and all of them have expressions and meanings that make sense only in their line of thought, or entire sentences that sound much much better in an specific language. And Portuguese is GREAT for songs, it is melifluos to perfection, not too much as French or to little as German. Also you can sound completely archaic without sounding ridiculous, like when using the second verbal person Tu (thee, thou). In English it would be complicated to address anyone asking ‘Hast thee thy car keys?’. It would be considered mocking and rude. Also, we have actual names for things, like blue cheese is called Gorgonzola. A name, instead of the statement that the cheese is blue. The list is huge.Yes, English is universal nowadays because it is very very simple, only 2 variations of persons at verbs, with 2 extra words to tell present tense from past or future.Anyone can learn English with just a bit of effort on memorizing vocabulary, compared to 6 variations of persons at each verb inside about 7 different tenses, plus gender on adjetives, duplicating the list. Better to go simple when communicating, right?Yes, but it is much much better to have options when explaining something new, when writing essays, poems, letters, job requisitions. When using your brain to understand in words.Portuguese is Beautiful, and not only I like it but am Proud of speaking it.

What is religion, according to Hindu scriptures?

The Hindu Scriptures, like the Jain and Buddhist Scriptures only talk about DHARMA. Dharma is often translated as “religion” but it is an inadequate term.Dharma is a very complex topic but is generally defined as:–dhāraṇād dharma ityāhuḥ dharmo dhārayate prajāḥ |ya syād dhāraṇa samyuktaḥ sa dharma iti niścayaḥ ||The word Dharma is derived from dhāraṇa or sustenance; Dharma sustains society. That which has the capacity to sustain is indeed Dharma. (M.B. Karna Parva 69:58Dharma is what differentiates humans from animals - both of which are sentient beings and thus emanations of the Divine.āhāra nidrā bhaya maithunaṃ ca sāmānyam etat paśubhir narāṇām |Dharmo hi teṣān adhiko viśeṣo Dharmeṇa hīnāḥ paśubhiḥ samānāḥ ||Eating, sleep, fear and procreation are common to both animals and humans, Dharma alone is specific to humans, without Dharma, they are equal to animals. (hitopadesha)Dharma has 12 components; 6 relating to self development and 6 relating to relationship with “others” —1. Purity (saucham) — The first requisite of Dharma and the foundation is the cultivation of a pure and healthy body and hence a pure and healthy mind. It is incumbent upon the Hindu to bathe twice a day or at least every morning and maintain good hygiene. The rules of purity are quite complex and cover everything from physical hygiene and eating to ritual purification after such occasions as death and birth.2. Sacrifice (yajña) — worship of God through the rituals that are prescribed in the various sacred texts (ie. Vedas and Agamas)3. Austerity (tapah) — refers to simple living and the practice of meditation.4. Self discipline (damah) — one should strive to control one's desires and behaviour, avoid excesses and cultivate self- discipline which is the basis of civilisation.5. Study (svadhyaya) — this concept refers to the Study of philosophy (investigation into the Truth) as well as self-study or introspection, self analysis and cultivation of insight into one's true Self.6. Contentment (shanti) — development of a peaceful disposition; being content with little and accepting whatever comes to one; be it pleasant or unpleasant, with equanimity.7. Non-violence (Ahimsa) — one should refrain from causing any injury to other living beings through word, deed or thought. The premise is that the ātman (Self) in all beings is the same and therefore one should treat all other beings with the utmost compassion as one should deal with oneself.8. Truth (satyam) — practice of truth in speech and harmony in action at all times. One should speak only that which is true and agreeable, one should not needlessly say things that are hurtful even though they may be the truth. One's actions should be in concordance with what one professes. The practice of truth includes in it such virtues as straightforwardness, frankness, absence of deviousness and malice and so forth.9. Charity (danam) — this has a twofold reference; one is the giving of charity to the needy as well as social works for the benefit of society as a whole. The other reference is to the gift of fearlessness to all creatures through cultivation of complete non-injury (ahimsa ) to any being in word, deed, or thought.10. Non stealing (asteya) — one should refrain from taking anything that is not given.11. Forgiveness (kshama) — and forbearance which comes from the cultivation of loving kindness to all beings.12. Veneration for elders (gurusevana) — the term guru (preceptor) covers the parents, elders and all those who teach something however insignificant it may be.

I have enrolled in the "Introduction to Logic" course (CS157) in Coursera by Stanford. Is it really as good as it sounds and will it help me improve my analytical and problem solving skills per se (Programming, etc.)?

Yes it will, but you might not be able to realise the direct implications right away. The improvements in your programming ability will be indirect. The course will teach you following things that improve your programming skills:1. Breaking down a problem - You will be able to break down a programming task into simple atomic statements.Example: Consider the following statement - If Tom is younger than Peter; or Tom is elder than Peter and Jack and Jill are of the same age then gift Tom an item X, Peter the item Y and Jack and Jill both the item Z.This can be broken down programmatically into:if((a < b) || ((a > b ) && (c == d))) {  // code for gifting } 2. Reduce a problem - You will be able to simplify a complex stated problem by applying logic formulae on broken down atomic statements and evaluating them, thereby eliminating redundant information in the problem and clubbing more than 1 such atomic statement into 1 atomic statement. You will also be able to deduce the non-obvious information in the problem.Example: By applying propositional logic you will be able to reduce the above example's clumsier if condition into:if((a < b) || (c == d)) {  // code for gifting } 3. Avoid the imprecision and ambiguity of natural language - The english that we write and speak is not too precise. We actually understand the ambiguous statements because we can relate the statement with its context. Computers need precise statements that have a single meaning. When you apply propositional logic you won't misinterpret complex statements when analyzing a problem.4. As an important pre-requisite of many other courses - Many courses like automata theory, machine learning and several algorithms will be easily understandable to you if you are good at first order logic. Many proofs/theorems/algorithms etc. are stated with the help predicate logic.5. As an important means of precise communication - In an interview, you need to communicate your idea of the solution to the interviewer. Merely explaining in words won't impress your interviewer. Writing precise logical statements that build up on one another will do it for sure! So, you can solve a problem and formally prove it to your interviewer that the solution is indeed correct.P.S: Sincere apologies for not providing a very good example. But at least that example will communicate the point I intend to make.
