It has been a fantastic year, until now atleast.Defended my doctoral thesis. And to put Gulab Jamun on top of ice-cream, concluded the tremendous four and half year journey of life from Awanish to Dr. Awanish in the exotic land of Paris. A tale to tell my grandkids.I always wanted to organize a woman-centered workshop to motivate them to pursue a career in scientific research. Finally, succeeded in persuading IISc. to arrange a workshop at Mount Carmel College, Bangalore, under their banner. And Mounts didn’t disappoint. The professional treatment and stupendous participants were worth every iota of effort. It remains one of the best outreach workshops we ever conducted.[1]Quit smoking. I am six months clean.Filed my first patent! The work was literally an outcome of a discussion with the professor over a cup of coffee. Also, learned that whenever your professor tells you, ‘It is an easy research work, a low hanging fruit. It can be done effortlessly.’ he actually means ‘prepare to die.’Started CrossFit training. In Bangalore, I participated in a few Reebok CrossFit events here and there, but all the dedicated gyms were far away from the college. In Belgium, it is a pretty well-established thing, and I decided to try it for the time I am here. It is amazing. 10/10 recommended.Amassed 4,000 followers on Quora. I had decided to pen something every day but the commitments of life don’t allow for regularity. But I am still satisfied that I wrote on a few different topics that were well-received by the community. Y’all followers, thanks a lot!Awarded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, to disseminate my research work among the common masses through creative writing. It has been the only time in life that I have been recognized for my writing.Learned cooking. And for someone who can’t even make Maggi or tea, it is an achievement that goes straight to the CV. The simplest answer to this question is that SSC will conduct a re-examination for CGL 2017. The vacancies that had already been created for the respective recruitment year in various departments will have to be filled. And for that, SSC will have to conduct CGL under the banner of CGL 2017 even if it finally conducts it in the year 2019.But what lakhs of aspirants who appeared for CGL 2017 would want to know is what will happen to their career due to this. If you go back to the hugely controversial case of CGL 2013, you will realise what a mayhem it had actually caused. Not just with respect to the examination, but also with respect to the confusion it created in various departments, which lead to hampering of career prospects of many people even before joining the department.Now, even in CGL 2017, it seems things are turning out in the same way, unfortunately. It will inevitably cause disappointment for a lot of people and can also turn out to be a fairy's kiss in the destiny for a lucky few. These lucky few could be those who didn't even clear tier 1 in the actual examination but go on to clear the re-examination and secure a job in the end, in the same examination where they couldn't even clear the prelims in the first place! (This ACTUALLY happened in CGL 2013).For the majority of others, it will cause an irrevocable damage in the form of lost precious 2 years at least, and even after entering the job, they might have to face the hassles of trying to argue with the admin of their respective departments regarding fixation of seniority with respect to those people who might have joined the department in this gap of about 2 years either from sports quota or on compassionate grounds. (Those people might be placed senior to those who cleared CGL 2017 as CGL 2017 candidates will only join the department in 2019 or 2020 and the other quota personnel would have joined the department earlier than the CGL candidates. Mind you, if this confusion is not sorted out in your favour, then you would have lost another couple of years of your career growth by the time of your retirement.)In short, the damage to the career of thousands has already been done, considering the fact that the result of an examination which was supposed to fill vacancies of 2017 will only be declared in 2019 and the appointment letters might only be issued by 2020.The loss here is in terms of time, money, career growth and of course the mental harassment that this examination has already caused.My advice to all those, including my sister who is going to appear for CGL 2018 (only God knows the fate of that examination will be) is this..…Keep your options open!
