PDF Editor FAQ

Why don't people want to be pilots. Both civilian airlines and the military have severe shortages why doesn't anybody want to become an aviator?

It’s not just people not wanting to be pilots. Pilots do have stringent requirements to get through (especially military). Why don’t people want to be pilots?Simple, really. Flying may scare some, flying may not be interesting for some. Lots of people have car licences, not many people want to spend the time and effort to get a racing licence. My friend tried taking up a pilot’s licence with the Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC). He quit after 1 month. Not because of waning interest, but the requirements he had to meet were too time consuming, and his grades were suffering as such. Some others, may have had an interest, but as they realise how horrendously complex everything is, they start to step away and look for other things. Why can’t people meet requirements?I can speak for this as I have tried to apply for the SYFC, which uses the same medical checkup as the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF). I failed that checkup, for reasons that were “confidential”. My friend, got in.Our interview stage cut out 40% of applicants. The Medical stage cut out the rest, eventually leaving around 10% or less of the initial applicants. Airforce Pilots are extraordinarily fit, they’re the most elite of the Air Force. They can’t waver under pressure. They have to be focussed on the mission at all times. They have to be able to think abstractly, not follow rules blindly. How focussed? Here’s a little test:Get a friend, and a half ball (the balancing thingy for yoga). DO ALL these simulataneously:Stand on the ball, and balance yourself. Your friend needs to nudge you (gently, or else you will definitely fall) every few seconds. You have to rebalance yourself. At the same time, ask your friend to come up with 2 numbers. The difference of these numbers is the code, you must remember this code. Now, your friend must give you a new number, which may or may not follow the code. (E.g. First number is 2444, Second number is 2440. Code is 4. Next number is 2436, follows code. Next number is 2430, doesn’t follow code)If it does, say Yes.If it doesn’t, say No, and take note of the next code. (in the example, its 6.)Repeat until end of exerciseAsk another friend to show you colours and shapes with numbers in them (numbers up to 20). If the number is of a certain colour/shape/number type combination, yell Confirmed. If not, don’t say anything.A colour could be red out of Red, Green, Yellow, Blue.A shape could be a Square, out of Square, Circle, HexagonNumber Type could be a mathematical rule, like “All numbers have to be prime numbers” or something.Do this for 10 minutes, making sure you don’t fall, and trying to get as far as possible. Record a video of yourself doing it. You’d want to use it to grade yourself and see what you have done wrong. This is a gross simplification of an aptitude test. The test I did for the RSAF was significantly harder, significantly longer, and significantly more confidential.I’d assume most people would turn away after trying this out. Airline pilots, glamorous and all, face different types of stress, for different reasons, and from different parties.

Does the UK allow firearms and other similar weapons to be used domestically as leniently as the US government?

The UK allows individuals to possess and use firearms. To do this, they must apply for a licence, giving a “good reason”, which is described in the Home Office Guide on Firearms Licensing Law. This can be, for example a farmer shooting vermin, shooting game birds or deer on controlled land, target shooting at a club, humane killing by a vet, historical enactments, or starting a race. These can only be types suitable for the particular purpose of the licence, and more military versions of the firearm or ammunition are prohibited.Under paragraph 13.08 “Firearms for personal protection” it says:“Applications for the grant of a firearm certificate for the applicant’s, or another’s, protection, or that of premises, should be refused on the grounds that firearms are not an acceptable means of protection in Great Britain.”There are restrictions on the carrying of weapons in public places. You can buy a kitchen knife and take it home in its packaging, but not carry it around for protection. There are further restrictions on selling, buying and carrying items which are purely weapons, such as a sword or knuckle-dusters.In considering The Use of Force in Self-Defence at a Place of Residence, it is generally accepted that prompt use of reasonable force is acceptable, and householders are very rarely prosecuted, even if an intruder is injured. Keeping a crossbow or sword for this purpose would be considered premeditated rather than spur of the moment, and is unlikely to be judged as reasonable. However, it would be for a jury to decide if picking up a kitchen knife was beyond reasonable.

Why does Singapore have such restrictive gun control laws compared to more “right to bear arms” focused nations like the USA?

Singapore emerged out of almost continuous race riots in the early 1960s. The government under Lee Kuan Yew from about 1965 clamped down on just about everything from chewing gum to commercial corruption.Cut out the guns and you have no problem with idiots with guns. US citizens, Australians, Canadians, even UK citizens have room for firing ranges and hunting. There is no room for that on Singapore and therefore no justification for private citizens to own guns. Claiming they are for self defense disqualifies the applicant for a gun licence, as in most nations.
