Many elegant and functional ideas have been created by man. My limited exposure has mostly been through the eyes of Modern Science so I cannot point out the most elegant (which is a subjective idea after all), but here are a few of the revolutionary ones that I know of (in no particular order although I think the first one is the grandest of all):1. So, it doesn't hurt to include the idea of mass-producing polythene. As a side note, don't forget pollution. Just saying...4. Internal combustion engineOne of our professors (teaching us Design History) mentioned that Combustion Engine probably ranks 2nd after (after the Wheel) as the most revolutionary human design. So, well, I will include it too. Of course, it looks sexy! And powerful. And no doubt, it's awesome!5. Lock and KeyThe thing that keeps you safe.
