I was on a panel interviewing IT candidates. We had our first interviewee and he appeared to be a good fit from the git go but the CIO stated he wanted to interview ALL the candidates. In come the second interviewee. Sports coat, wearing jeans, he arrives with a brown bag and sits down. Without missing a beat, he proclaims “Let the bidding begin” and starts to eat his breakfast sandwich. The panel was literally astonished and starts to ask him his “motives” for coming into an interview and acting like this. There is confident, there is cocky, and there is this guy. He starts off by telling us he will not work for less than $50K ( 2006 era salary ), he will not work weekends nor nights, and he is smarter than anyone in the room. He proceeds to answer questions with an “are you an idiot” look/smirk and answer. On paper, he looked good, but in person…..I would not pay him to clean up a cat’s litter box!Needless to say, his chances went from 10% to zero in a heartbeat. The interview was “completed” in 5 minutes with a dressing down from the CIO. A week later, the HR manager asked why we did not choose him over the other candidates. We replied by summarizing his mannerism and answers to our few questions and how he presented himself. Her reply was “he is always this way, but he is a good boy”. Turns out the “good boy” was her sister’s son!

That 95% of work is routine that require lot of patience and tidiness and little creativity.Usually you add a button, copy paste some code on the front-end, copy-paste some code on the back-end, spend 5x time you put into development on manual testing, writing documentation, resolving issue, writing emails to all concerned parties, filling timesheets and then move on to the next button. Just after that your workday ends. Nice work, 48 more buttons to go.Once in 3 months a real challenging task arises and developers start to fight each other for the opportunity to solve it.In one company we had an online chat to discuss ongoing tasks. Sometimes our manager would write something like this:- Alright guys, got new task for you, need to do this and that. We’ll hold an auction. Let the bidding begin!- I’ll do it in 5 days- 5 days one, 5 days two…- I’ll do it in 4- 4 days one, 4 days two, 4 days three! Sold to Bob with bid of 4 days, I’m awaiting results next Monday. Thank you everybody.
