What are good tips and resources for a software designer looking to go full-time as a freelancer?

I haven't been freelancing full time for a while now. I do some contact work on the side but my day to day work is with a team I joined over a year ago. This was mostly out of desire to learn from people smarter than me. I can, however, share a few tips I learned when freelancing for years before moving into a full time gig.Forget the term "freelance". People seem to have this weird image of freelancing. They imagine sitting in a hipster coffee shop sucking down $6 specialty coffees and pounding away on the best work they've ever done. Get real, ignore the term freelancing and start thinking about it as a "one man/woman business". You're now an accountant, designer, manager, biz dev person, and sleazy glad-handing client services person. You have a lot of rolls and each need clear focused attention and processes to make your business work.Get really good at the money part. My first question to anyone is almost always "What's your budget?" This kills 90% of head aches of figuring out if clients are worth your time. You'll find a number of people who think they can get 50 screens designed for $300. Cut these people out right away. People seem to have different success charging by hour or by project. My experience is that hourly is simpler. We're naturally terrible estimators even with experience. Charging hourly and saying "X is very minimum number of hours I can do, we can add more hours for iterations, revisions..etc." is a great way to give the client an decent estimate and put him/her in the driver seat as to how much or how little they're willing to pay.Always get a deposit. The size can depend on the scope of the project but 50% is standard. I've also heard of 1/3 method where you take 1/3 at the beginning, 1/3 "half-way" through and 1/3 at the end. But always, always get a decent deposit even if you have a contract and trust the client. Cashflow is king.Don't get hung up on tools. Get only what you need. For example: Google docs with a invoice template is probably enough for invoicing. Keep it simple, those costs add up.Post your work everywhere. Dribbble, Behance, Forrst, Twitter, everywhere you can think. And keep is updated! In the eyes of a perspective client you're only as good as your worst work.Get on lists. There's tons of designer lists, YC list, elegant.ly. Look at this Where is the best place to find good UI designers? but read the title as "All the places people should be able to find me". User-11761687733835879500 has a talk somewhere about Finding Designers (I can't find the link) but if you can, find that video and reverse it so that you're findable.Include the client in the process. This is key, the last thing you want to do is get a basic brief and then hide away for weeks. Keep them in the process every step of the way. Here's a blog post a wrote a while back thats kind of lame but very relevant: http://claytoncorreia.com/blog/clients-from-heavenKnow the type of work you want to do and market to that. (see the blog post above). I've found that a little bit of specialization gains more clients than a broader approach.Theres so much more but I hope that helps.

Comments from Our Customers

I purchased CocoDoc tunes2go, approx a week ago (i wanted to transfer my ipod music onto my samsung s7 phone. I received the registration code inserted it etc, and my licence status then changed to VALID until MAY 2019. Despite this when i get as far as trying to make the transfer i get the message "you cannot transfer files when using a trial version). Tried several times to contact support and for the life of me i cannot work out what they want- red stars all over the place. I am pretty well convinced that i have been conned out of my money, pathetic and unclear method of contacting support and overall a very bad experiencel;
