PDF Editor FAQ

If you had a dog that you truly loved for 10 or 12 years and it died, would you look for a dog of a similar breed?

For some people, I’m sure it’s the right thing to do. For me, it’s turning out to be difficult. I adopted an older Duck Tolling Retriever as a rescue a few months ago. I had previously had a Toller that I got as a puppy from a well-respected breeder. That dog was the light of my life, and it was pure stupidity that I never thought to get him a gold-plated, gold-engraved, pure gold certificate saying Best Dog in the World. He died of old age and I missed him terribly. It was two years before I could speak his name without bawling, and then I wasn’t in a position to have another dog anyway for a long time.I had cats, and a couple of years ago my last elderly cat died. I wanted another one, but I drive across country and back every summer so it didn’t seem right. My daughter (who remembered Toller #1 very well) said I ought to get a dog. I eventually saw this current dog on a Toller rescue site, and thought, an older Toller, just right!Well. Anyone who has seen my other posts about this dog knows that he came with a lot of problems. All Tollers are high energy, but this one is high anxiety too. And his response to anxiety is to growl, growl/lunge, bite, or bark. It’s exhausting, and I often get discouraged about how little I can actually enjoy him. He does love to retrieve and play and swim and hike, he loves and trusts me and has fun learning tricks - but I can never go off “alert” when walking him. I can only let him off leash in very limited conditions where there are NO other dogs.My first Toller was entirely trustworthy. When he was just a puppy, a neighbor girl picked him up and squeezed him really hard, and he did nothing but look scared. He never threatened to bite, never growled, hardly ever barked. He was everybody’s friend. I find myself comparing the new dog to him all the time, and it’s not fair to him. Because I assumed that Toller #1 was the way all Tollers would be, and it’s hard to accept that I was wrong.I’m doing my best with the rescue dog, and he’s certainly better, but I often think that he may never be the dog I thought he’d be and will always be a “project” rather than my buddy. I miss that ability to trust him. But giving him up isn’t an option - it would just increase his anxiety even more, and most people wouldn’t be able to deal with his aggression at all. He’s doing his best, too. He wants to be a good dog. He just needs me to understand him for himself.

Why don't the Muslim countries come to rescue the refugees of the Middle East despite claiming themselves as champions of Islam?

Some do some of the time, Gulf countries took in millions of Syrians as “Arab brothers in need”. They didn’t classify them as refugees and consequently didn’t show up in UNHCR report of refugees, leading to misleading reports they closed down the border to Syrians even in reputable agencies. Lebanon took in by far the most Syrians and so on.On the other hand what they’re doing with Palestinians for the past 70 years is a crime against humanity. Holding an entire nation hostage in order to provide a convenient foreign enemy against whom to rally their people when they need a distraction from domestic problems is one of the worst crimes against humanity in history. They forced three generations of suffering upon their brothers, with no end in sight, alledgedly because they can’t tollerate a non-Muslim state in Palestine, but what I wrote above is the reality. In short, it’s because leaders of Middle Eastern countries consider Islam the same way a stereotypical corrupt right-wing European politician might consider Christianity. It’s something they display proudly display to be a part of and consider a main aspect of their lives and how the country should be led and what the people should attend all the while considering the religion and their followers stupid. Saudi elite loves (private) pool parties and booze while denouncing debauchery of non-Islamic behavior. This extends to all aspects of their policy by now, so they save their brothers when saving them is convenient and hold them hostage when holding them hostage is convenient. Their brothers are cattle to the ruling elites.

What kind of dog is best for hikers?

Suggestion: Consider adopting a rescued Nova Scotia Tolling Duck Retriever also called a tolling duck dog or a tollie.Apart from having done benefits over other large retrievers, tollers are generally non aggressive and like water and like other retrievers are natural swimmers and have webbed feet.Image: brown doggie on the right is a toller - pic from link given below.About the breed: This is the smallest retriever and apart from being energetic is capable of being calm and accompanying owners even when watching TV for hours and loves travel and will follow its owners everywhere. It is also less social than the labrador or golden retriever and take time to socialise or know people and while being cheerful and mostly non agressive and sociable does not go wild in trying to bond with strangers or be greedy about food or chase objects or demand to play.Additionally as it is small, it is easier to carry if needed or transport than a bigger breed. My personal experience:We have a mixed breed adopted dog that has Nova Scotia Tolling Duck Retriever genes in her and she is delightful and loves to walk.Image: my tollie mix doggie, pic credit: Nalin SavaraFor more info about the breed:(1) see: Nova Scotia Duck Trolling Retriever Dog Breed Information, Pictures, Characteristics & Facts - Dogtime(2) Google the above breed name and watch YouTube videos that talk more of the breed characteristics of tollies. Finally:Remember #adoptdontshop #avoidbackyardbreedersHope this helps.
