Also read about the history of how major nonprofits came into being…the YMCA, Red Cross, United Way, Boys and Girls Clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Other topics are fundraising, philanthropy, foundations, government contracting, program evaluation, governance, social work, social welfare, child welfare, animal welfare. To understand how nonprofits operate study organizational behavior, human motivation, psychology. Read about community development, poverty, mental health, addiction. Understand the history of libraries, hospitals, universities and colleges, private schools. Look at the relationship between the nonprofit sector and religion, government, international diplomacy.

I was volunteering in a YMCA summer camp when another classroom had a lot of drama from a little 5-year-old. He was wild, refused boundaries, and was very aggressive to other campers. I was quickly reassigned to work with him due to my background with working with behavioral and emotionally challenged children. He was quite the handful, but did respond to the one-on-one support. He turned out to be a little sweetie. I would walk him out to meet his mother at the end of the day, and I found out he was a foster child from a chaotically abusive home. He had 4 siblings close in age that were all placed in different foster homes due to very poor behavior. The saddest thing I encountered each day for this sweet boy was the numerous scars from small cuts on his face. There were 7 or 8. I ask his foster mother what could have caused them, and she related that when this boy acted up, his bio mom would slap him with the back of her hand. And, on that hand was a large sharp stoned ring. The slapping with the ring caused the cuts. Broke my heart.Surprisingly, this boy enrolled in kindergarten in a local school district, and I was called to an emergency evaluation by an out of control student. (I was the K-3 teacher of an off campus behavioral needs program.) The student was my YMCA buddy. He had cut off the pony tail of the girl in front of him and then it was downhill from there. Of course I had a lot more assessment information than just that day’s observation, and he came into my classroom pretty quickly. I’m not saying the next three years were smooth because this little boy had much rage and lack of development that made him very difficult to work with. He was on a strict program at school and home. (His foster family eventually adopted him.) They provided him with the best of their ability in raising him. Sadly, when he turned 18, he sought out his bio mom in a town an hour away. He slid into the drug culture in that home very quickly, and rejected the only people who really cared about him.So sad and frustrating.

I recommend that any new M.A. students start with grappling sports like Wrestling, Judo, or BJJ.They need to focus on developing discipline, strength, endurance, and coordination early if they are to be able to participate fully in martial training later. Your sons will quickly gain fitness, and at their ages positive body images will help build self-esteem, which is very important for pre-teens and teens. They will be working out with their friends, and participating in symmetrical competition under close supervision.YMCA Wrestling, Judo, and BJJ classes, if available, might also be good resources.I really like striking arts, but i’ve witnessed two “problems” when kids start them too early:Beginner programs designed specifically for kids often lack realism. Sparring is either “no contact” or such light contact that it’s functionally useless for real self defense. The kids can develop unrealistic levels of confidence which can get them in trouble in real life confrontations.”Realistic” sparring often intimidates kids and turns them off if they haven’t the yet acquired the requisite physical and mental maturity. Bloody noses from punches are often traumatic.Start them off with grappling for a year or so, then talk with them about other options. They (and you) will be much better informed in choosing their future training path.
