In a car dealership service center, there are usually two main fieldsService ManagementSales ManagementIf you go ahead in service management, then your hierarchy would start with a Technician>>Service advisor>>Service managerA diploma guy joining a service center usually joins as a Technician, he will be trained in Servicing the vehicle.After 6 months or 1 year based on Service center rules, he will be promoted to service advisor. The service advisor has to take care of the incoming vehicles, recognize the problems in the vehicle and assign the vehicle to technicians. The vehicle he undertakes is his responsibility till it leaves the service center.The service manager is usually the head of service advisors. This is not observed in all the service centers. Even if you’re uncomfortable.After I got my AWS Solution Architect associates, my managers noticed and sent me an opportunity to build RedShift clusters for a client in DC. I had never worked with technology like that, and I was worried that I would fail. I had the opportunity to say no, and I was very close to doing that.Fortunately, I had friends and a support network to give me courage to accept that position. And it was one of the best decision I’ve made in my career.Without taking that position first, I never would have been considered for the technical lead position I’m currently in.ConclusionThat’s what I did to get from being a sales person to technical lead on a ‘Big Data’ project. This advice is not prescriptive, as I don’t believe in ‘To Dos’ when it comes to your career. Had another opportunity arisen to be a web developer earlier in my career, this experience would have been very different.But the three practices of getting a new position, Knowledge, Network and Experience, would always be the same.
