I was born in 1970s and remember my childhood during 1980s very distinctly.People say, the life then was much simpler than today.I second that, life was simpler because there were no options.Entertainment -ThenOnly 1 channel, Doordarshan. Even watching “Krishi Darshan” or Hindi news at 9 was counted as entertainment.NowThere are numerous options - Satellite DTH (500+ channels), Netflix, Broadband Internet, Mobile, Laptop, Computers, YouTube, Online entertainment, Chromecast…… and many more.Commute -ThenI remember we had a Girnar scooter which my father used to clean every Sunday and it was the only option for our family commute. Whole family on one scooter.Now -We have scooters, bikes for every family member, a family car, metro, buses.We have Ola, Uber at our doorstep.Employment -ThenIt was an era of Socialism. Social security through government jobs was ensured. I remember there were many departments in government offices just to ensure people are getting paid.My uncle used to work for a department - “Conservation of tribal art & culture”.Do you know how many people worked in that department ?More than 100+ employees in that department.But the options for career were limited. You can be an engineer, a babu (Clerk) in government office, or a doctor.NowThis is an era of “Hire - Work - Fire”.Layoffs are very common.People switch companies like switching clothes.Today, there are numerous options for career. You can be a chef, a photographer, a website designer, a storyteller, a corporate coach, anything you want to be.Social LifeThenI remember how good social connections my parents used to have.It was big social circle where people used to visit us or we visit them.They had a lot of time for visiting, writing letters, meeting new people, making new connections.NowSocial connections are only limited to Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp.People don’t have enough time after 9 to 9 job.So coming to the question - Life was indeed simpler but not stress free.Our parents had their own challenges.With limited options they need to survive and take care of their family.Salaries were very low because government had to take care of social security for everyone.That was an era of licensing. For everything from telephone, car, scooter, one had to apply through license.A lot of people were dependent on ration. Getting 1 kg of rice from ration shop was like an adventure. Hours of standing in queue. People talk about queues during demonetization in front of ATMs. They should have seen the crazy queues in front of ration shops.Communicating with distant relatives was not so easy because owning a telephone was a luxury. There were no STD-PCO like we had during 90s because of licensing on telephone.Distance-calling was so costly that it would strip your monthly take home salary.Commuting with family was a challenge because everyone can not afford cars. People were dependent more on public transport, which was not good like today.So, in nut-shell, life was simple but not stress-free.Thanks for reading!

Honestly, it’s bliss.Ever since the Covid pandemic started, my wife and I have refused to visit anyone, or be visited by anyone.We have basically committed to voluntary self-isolation in a house in a village in the forested north of Sweden, with two cats, good streaming service, work from home arrangements, and groceries to be picked up by us at the supermarket’s backdoor upon weekly order.We have online video meetings with the whole family twice a week for several hours at a time.I can’t imagine a better way to live.No one to come to my house and spread their DNA and germs, and we don’t need to go and entrust ourselves to someone else and their possibly dubious hygiene regimen and food and drink.Call me a hermit, but this situation has finally given me and my wife an excuse to live life the way we actually like.
