I’ll assume that by “academic paper” you mean a paper submitted to a research publication venue, such as a conference or a special issue of a journal.One of the first research papers I wrote for a major conference had a little problem: I submitted it something like a month before the published deadline — and they lost it! My advisor then gave me the little bit of wisdom that you never should submit earlier than about a week before the deadline and you usually can still have a paper accepted up to a week late. For many electrical and computer engineering venues, he was right. I’ve been involved in running a fair number of conferences, so here’s what I’ve seen really going on behind the scenes….In many cases, not a single paper is submitted until about a week before the deadline (nor are they expected, and disturbingly often submission software is not yet fully configured nor tested). It is not unusual for the vast majority to be submitted in the last day. However, it also is common that many potential authors will request a short extension of the deadline within the last few days — at a time when the organizers have not yet seen very many submissions. Thus, the organizers have a little dilemma: do they keep the deadline hard and risk having too few good papers submitted or do they soften and extend the deadline? Very often, the organizers will decide to push the deadline back by a week — but it wouldn’t be fair to do that for some people and not others. So, the web site suddenly gets a new due date posted.Things have been going on like this my entire academic life… so conference organizers have learned to expect it. There is also the realization that last-minute posting of a new deadline looks like a desperate and unprofessional move.
