Commander of the encircled town of Bastogne.The fortune of war is changing. This time the U.S.A. forces in and near Bastogne have been encircled by strong German armored units. More German armored units have crossed the river Our near Ortheuville, have taken Marche and reached St. Hubert by passing through Hompre-Sibret-Tillet. Libramont is in German hands.There is only one possibility to save the encircled U.S.A. troops from total annihilation: that is the honorable surrender of the encircled town. In order to think it over a term of two hours will be granted beginning with the presentation of this note.If this proposal should be rejected one German Artillery Corps and six heavy A. A. Battalions are ready to annihilate the U.S.A. troops in and near Bastogne. The order for firing will be given immediately after this two hours term.All the serious civilian losses caused by this artillery fire would not correspond with the well-known American humanity.The German Commander.McAuliffe just blurted out “Nuts!” and tossed the message in a trash can.Understand here that unlike, say, Patton, McAuliffe didn’t use profanity, ever (according to his aide at the time Vincent Vicari). So this was typical of his language.The Germans were confused. So McAuliffe actually wrote out:To the German Commander.NUTS!The American Commander.The Germans were now even more confused. So the Americans explained that the message meant the Germans could go to hell, and that every German soldier who tried to enter the town would be killed.It’s a classically American line right up there with Chesty Puller’s “We're surrounded. My husband and I went to a no kill shelter “just to look”. We watched the new kittens for a while and then we went into the 4 month and older room. We sat on a bench and a beautiful Russian Blue four months old came over to us. She examined us carefully and finally let my husband pick her up. We fell in love. They were running a special adoption fee and you paid by weight. She weighted 4lbs &2oz. Our fee was $4.20. We named her Shadow. The first night she got into our bed to sleep. In the morning all the toys we had bought for her were in the bed with us. The Vet said she was bringing us gifts. She was fully litter trained and has never had an accident. If you live in NJ and want an animal the place to go is St. Huberts. Our cat was already spayed, chipped and registered, and had her shots.

I don’t know if Yanks find this stuff unusual but I work at Yuk Yuks Ottawa, it is the capital btw and borders Gatineau, Quebec so we are probably the most Canadian of Canuck towns when it comes to variety. Different flavours.Candy Bars, or as we call them, Chocolate Bars: Smarties; Caramilk; Crunchie; Kinder Surprise; Coffee Crisp; Aero; Big Turk; Yorkie; MacIntosh Toffee; Sweet Marie; Mr. Big; Wunderbar; Mars BarsMontreal Style Bagels. The best are from Fairmont Street in Outremont, Montreal. OMG. Fresh out of the oven 24.7.365.Kraft Dinner. What do you people eat in University?Kraft Peanut Butter. Crunchy or Smooth.Hickory Sticks. To me.Caesars. It is a drink that was invented in Calgary about half a century ago. Clamato juice, vodka and spices. Varies a bit from bar to bar. I saw them with bacon at a Calgary Flames game.Restaurants that aren’t available more than an hour south of the border, if that: Harvey’s. A hamburger chain where they let you pick the condiments. Swiss Chalet/St. Hubert. A mid range sit down resto. I frankly cannot tell the two apart. I think Swiss Chalet is more Canadian and St. Hubert is more franco phonesque.Timmy’s. Tim Horton’s. Founded by a Hall of Fame NHL player, that’s hockey, named Tim Horton. Donuts and coffee and a bunch of other stuff. One cannot swing a dead cat in Canada without hitting a Timmy’s.President’s Choice. It is the house brand for Loblaws which is massive in Canada under many banners. Provigo, Your Independent Grocer [ironic, eh?], Zehr’s, Maxi, Superstore, Great Canadian Superstore, T and T, Shoppers Drug Mart and many more.
