PDF Editor FAQ

While populated urban areas tend to be Democrat, why does Texas seem to be the Republican flagship?

First, Texas is not the “Republican flagship”. It’s far from the most Republican state and is increasingly purple. I’m not sure there are “flagships” for either party, but, if you wanted to name one for the Republicans, I’d say Oklahoma, Idaho or Utah would make better choices.Second, urban areas, even in Texas, are very likely to be majority Democratic. Results are not generally available by city vs. rural, but county data is available. See Texas Election Results 2016in 2016, Clinton won Dallas county, Travis county (Austin), Harris county (Houston) and Bexar county (San Antonio). The wins would be larger if you looked just at the cities themselves.More generally, if you look at the most and least urban states (see Urbanization in the United States - Wikipedia) then the least urban states tend to be Republican (with the exception of VT and ME) while the most urban ones are almost all Democratic strongholds (which might be a better word than “flagship”) (with Utah being a big exception).

What is the political culture of Dallas, TX?

What is the political culture of Dallas, TX?The question is slightly complicated. If you’re talking strictly about the population within the city limits, it’s a very mixed bag. There are predictably conservative precincts, and predictably liberal ones; these tend to follow minority status lines, with the southern part of the city having more racial minorities and the Oak Lawn/Cedar springs area having a higher concentration of sexual orientation/identification minoritiesTexas doesn’t have voters register by party, but voting in party primaries is a reasonable proxy. In 2016, for Dallas County, the Democratic Primary for President, had 1.2M registered voters; 160k voted in that primary. Clinton got 71% of that; Sanders, 28%.In the Republican Primary, with that same 1.2M registered voters, there were 175k voted in that primary (but it was held after Bush had dropped out). In that primary, Cruz got 35%, Rubio 26%, and Trump almost 25%.In the general election, with slightly more registered voters, 770k ballots were cast. Of those….318k cast a Democratic Party Straight Ticket ballot, and Clinton received 461k votes total. 183k cast a Republican Party Straight Ticket ballot, and Trump received 262k votes.Among the congressional candidates, Democratic Party candidates received 268k votes, while Republican candidates received 291k votes. But in 2 districts, the Democratic party did not field a candidate. The district lines have packed the Democratic voters into two districts, where the Democratic candidates won more than 70% of the votes in their district.Bear in mind a portion of the city of Dallas is in Collin County, but that portion is overall higher income and less minority than the average Dallas, As against that, there are other cities within Dallas County.Dallas is more progressive than the average Texas city. In recent years, it had passed an ordinance requiring merchants (with a few exceptions) to charge 5 cents for each plastic bag provided, in an attempt to give people an incentive to carry their own shopping bags. That lasted until someone sued the city. In the face of the lawsuit, the city repealed the fee, but not after rejecting, on a 9–6 vote, an ordinance that would have completely banned them. In 2014, Dallas voters approved an amendment to the city charter (with 77% vote) to extend non-discrimination protections to city employees based on sexual orientation and gender identity.Additional data available at Dallas County, TX Elections

Why are Americans living in the south usually more politically conservative than those living in other parts of the United States?

They’re not. This is an old stereotype.Maps like this one are basically worthless. They have the nuance of a robot imitating Pavarotti. At the county level, it’s not nearly so simple, is it? There’s quite a bit of red here up in the North. Even in the Deep North (Alaska.)For some reason, people don’t ask the question “Why are Americans living in the North usually more politically conservative than folks living in other parts of the country?” Fact is, outside of cities, Northerners can be very conservative. Since 2016 for sure, and frankly before. The urban-rural divide does not explain all of America’s political divisions. But it explains some of it. And there are massive swathes of rural areas in the North. Also, I’ve got news for you: every large city in the South leans Democrat. In general, the urban South is liberal by U.S. standards, and it’s quite liberal by many global standards. Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas are significantly more liberal than parts of the Muslim world. (Except we can’t actually “say” this.)Go back to that county map. You’ll see a few large splashes of blue down there in rural Alabama, southeastern Arkansas, central South Carolina…. Those aren’t cities. I’ve been to some of those places. They’re some of the most rural places you can imagine. What gives? There are millions of black voters in the American South. To be fair, black Southern Democrats are some of the most conservative Democrats. Where I live, they’d be confused for Republicans. But they do vote for the Democratic Party overwhelmingly. And they’re certainly Southerners. If you look at the “swing vote” — voters who voted differently in 2016 than in 2012 — then the South isn’t nearly as conservative as the Midwest and the rural Northeast. In fact, it’s becoming significantly more enthralled by the Democratic Party. Oh, and all those Mormons in Utah might not be as terrible as the Lefties think they are. Mormons are upset by pussy-grabbing, too. While every county in Utah except two voted Republican, the swing vote shows that many Mormons refused to vote for the Coyote-in-Chief. (And also that the demographics of Utah — like those of the South — have been changing for some time now.)Regional views about the U.S. tend to be simplistic and even a bit dumb. The South is one of the most complex and interesting corners of the United States: and certainly it is not a bunch of hillbillies sitting on the porch with a shotgun and a corn-cob pipe.I’ve been leaning more to the right myself since 2016, but if you want to hear some hard-core extremists, come up to the rural Midwest — Wisconsin, Michigan — and listen to people talk about Hillary Clinton. These are some of the most radicalized, angry and bitter people in the country. They’ll say things that would make a Southerner blush. And they live well north of the Mason-Dixon Line.Dig deeper and look at the U.S. in-depth. It’s a complicated place.
