What is it like to be an Indian living in China?
China is a good place to live in, provided you can speak their language. People are super helpful and will work with you to understand you. Also, Chinese people are always smiling and they make really good food!I spent most of my time in Suzhou whereas I did stay Nanjing and Shanghai for some time. I did not learn any Mandarin before going because I assumed that most people would speak some English and boy, I’ve never been so wrong. Many Indians are vegetarians. A word of caution - it is difficult to find pure vegetarian food in China. Though big cities have a few Indian restaurants where you can find vegetarian food.Talking about Suzhou, it is a calm and serene city built over a network of canals. The modern part of the city is just like any other metropolitan whereas the old city (in the picture) has a unique beauty.I was warned by my friends that Chinese people are not very welcoming to the foreigners, especially Indians, turns out this is not true. Whenever I went outside, I was greeted by smiling facing - many of them also asking to get a picture with me. I was a temporary celebrity.Public buses and subways are available for local transportation in most of the cities in China. In Suzhou, the public buses did not have any directions in English and the announcements were also made in Mandarin, whereas the subway stations were more suitable for me because the case was different there. For intercity travel, trains are a better option because they rarely get delayed whereas flights can be delayed due to weather, so it roughly takes equal time to travel by train or by plane. My stay in China won’t have been possible without my savior Chinese, Taiwanese and Malaysian friends who helped me translate, get food and make things amazing.Summing up - If you’re an Indian - well, works for any nationality, moving to China:Learn some basic Mandarin beforehand - Numbers, Food and drinks, What is this, What is that, How much, Yes, No, Do you speak English, I don’t speak Chinese. MOST IMPORTANTFind some Chinese friends and spend time with them to know more about Chinese culture and language.Prefer trains over planes.

Is it safe at night in China?
When I was young, I grow up in Ningbo, China. When I was 14, I made my first trip to Suzhou, without my parents’ company. That’s around 15 years ago, around the labor day golden week. My friend Jay, (17 at that time, who is the son of my mother’s friend), decided to go Suzhou to meet a net-pal. Of cause he’s not going to tell the parents the truth, he just say he wants to have a short trip over there. His parents agreed, and wanted him to bring along his cousin Henry, who’s also 14. I guess I have been spending too much time with my computer, during that vacation, so my mother also asked him to bring me along. So the band of 3 boy scoots,17+14+14, set off. The plan is a 2 nights stay only, so no much luggage was there. Suzhou is around 400km away, by that time there is no high speed rail system, it took us around 5 hrs on the bus to get there. There is also no smart phone, or subway available at that time, we spent some real time in finding the direction to the downtown. When we reached at the hotel, it’s already 6pm.Being young, free from parent’s supervision, we have some crazy things wants to do. First thing first, we jumped into a net-cafe for a game competition (Definitely AOE and Starcraft addiction). Lucky that at that time they still allow minors to play in the net-cafe (China tightened the control some years later, because they found some people watches AV in the net-cafe.).We came out the net-cafe empty-stomached, around 9pm. We picked a random restaurant, I still remember the signature drink they have in the restaurant is called “whatever” and “Anything”. Dinner finished at 10pm, we yet to decide what to do next. Jay called his net-pal, and wanted to find the girl. It’s a date, of cause he wanted to drop the package(the 2 little tails) somewhere and move alone. So he brought us back to the net-cafe, told us we can play as long as we can, and disappeared in the crowds. But we was too tired. we decided to go back sleep at around 1130. We two walked back to the street. The shops almost all closed. Night was still cold, the waitress lady from the “whatever and anything” restaurant saw us on the stress, came around asking if we know how to go back. (She’s beautiful and lovely.)We walked around 15mins back to hotel, and fall asleep very soon.To many people, Suzhou means something like this:But what I remember about Suzhou that night, is something like this:If you ask me is it safe at night in China, I will say,It’s safe for boys to walk outside without adult’s supervision, during the very night. And it is safe like this more than 15 years ago.
