He is currently suspended in Washington, D.C. for non paying his dues. They’ve existed with them for centuries, they both fear and respect them, and many tribes make a point of killing them to protect villagers and livestock. They also hunt them for their very valuable skins. But for the most part (there are exceptions such as the Bahia region of northeast Brazil), they just don’t eat them. A large anaconda can provide over 500 lbs. of meat, yet there is a tradition over much of the snake’s range that these snakes just aren’t on the menu. It’s a cultural thing.Caimans and jaguars certainly are not shy about eating them (if they find one small enough to tackle), so they are not poisonous. Foreign adventurers into the jungle may eat them, though; even though locals turn up their nose at them.So to answer the question, yes they are edible, and eating one may save your life if you are lost in the jungle. With just a few exceptions, all snakes are edible. A very small number are poisonous. Now don’t confuse “poisonous” with “venomous”. Venomous, as has been mentioned in nearly every snake article on Quora, means they can inject a venom into your body, and you will suffer toxic consequences of one sort or other when the venom enters your bloodstream or muscles. This injection can either be by tooth (fang), or by sharp spurs or spines on other parts of the body. There is a venom sac attached to whatever they use as an injecting device (like on a bee!). Poisonous, on the other hand, means that eating it will be the reason for you getting sick. A snake can be one, the other, or both. Anacondas are none of the above. These terms are not used exclusively for snakes. They can apply to any animal, of which there are plenty of examples of both.Platypuses are an example of a venomous mammal, for instance. Their bite isn’t venomous, but the males have venomous spurs on their hind feet that will make you wish you never messed with them.Whereas Blowfish (or Puffers) are an infamous example of an animal that is very poisonous.In fact, their blood is fatal to humans. They have gained notoriety because there is a practice in advanced Japanese sushi, which properly prepares Blow-fish for human consumption. But it’s often found too risky for most people to try, as the sushi chef really, REALLY needs to know what he’s doing!Finally… even though I’ve just stated that anacondas are edible, I don’t have any information as to how palatable they are. In other words… they just may not be very tasty!I’d like to encourage people to start correctly using the word “venomous”, instead of incorrectly using “poisonous”. Go ahead… the word won’t bite you. When you speak of animals like rattlesnakes, cotton-mouths, black widows or scorpions, you won’t sound weird saying venomous. It’s the right word. “Poisonous” is most often used when referring to toxic plants; like eating poisonous berries or mushrooms; or when referring to toxic products under your kitchen sink.While I’m here, and we’re on this subject… I’ll take this opportunity to dispel a very common myth regarding a certain animal… the Kimono Dragon:Oops! Sorry about that… Typo! I meant to say, the Komodo Dragon:There… that’s better. It has long been known that Komodo Dragons can kill their prey by biting it and transferring tons of various deadly bacteria that live in their filthy, disgusting mouth, and their victims die quickly of infection. The thing is…. this is FALSE!These dragons actually do have venom glands, which emit toxins that lower blood pressure, cause massive bleeding, prevent clotting and induce shock. Rather than using bacteria as venom, the dragons use venom as venom! Go figure! The bacteria myth is proving very difficult to dispel, and can be compared to the “Alpha Male” model of wolf packs, which has also been a hard rumor to kill (pssst… wolf packs are simply regular families, with no Alpha Male).The whole “bacteria kills” model on dragons began in 1969, when a bloke named Auffenberg, an American biologist, spent years watching them. He noticed that when water buffalo were bitten, they would soon develop fatal infections. Based on this observation, and no actual evidence, he suggested that the dragons use bacteria as a form of venom. This has been proven false recently (someone decided to check!) … within the last ten years… and now all the textbooks, documentaries, etc. that claim this myth, are really misleading and hard to get rid of. But at least the Komodo Dragon’s reputation for horrible dental hygiene has finally been rebuked! They are all very happy and smiling about that.I kinda feel sorry for Walter Auffenberg’s kids though. Dad was known for one great thing! And now…. oh well. That’s how science goes, sometimes.EDIT: Now, to be totally fair to Auffenberg, it turns out that he never stated this as an absolute fact. He merely described his observations and offered a hypothesis in his book. The scientific community took it, and ran with it. Studying these dragons is very difficult, as one might imagine. They can be enormous and are quite dangerous. Walking up to one and saying “Say ahhh…” is something that not a lot of people wanted to do. So nobody really followed up on the study until recently, where the experiments performed were quite extensive, on both wild and captive dragons. The results are both exhaustive and conclusive.
