First you have to evaluate your abilities in photography, are you an amateur or a professional, or somewhere in between? In the first two levels, to increase your experience and improve your photography overall, seek out lower-level or non-professional sports events to photograph and make sure you do your research first in order to gain the best access; these smaller level events are the best place to practice your techniques in sports photography.Practice doesn’t make you perfect, practice increases your chances at getting better at what you do and the sports photographers of professional events are very good at what they do—that’s why they are granted access. So get good at shooting sports first, then take your great photos and build a sports photography portfolio to show to a photo editor of the specific publication or organization you are wanting to issue you credentials for access to future events.Like all genres of photography, just because you are good or great in one, doesn’t mean you’ll be just as equally successful in another genre. I’ve seen great professional editorial photographers, many with high awards or nominations for the top awards in photography, who couldn’t shoot their way out of a paper bag when it comes to fashion or glamour photography.In the latter two genres it’s imperative that you have great communication skills with your subject, something a landscape or sports photographer doesn’t have to worry about too much other than great communication skills when dealing with coordination and access.For example, when I was an NBA photographer for five years, part of our credential agreement is we, as photographers are not allowed to talk to the players unless they talk to us first—coaches want their players focused on the game, not the camera lens. The season credential usually comes with requirements like you have to cover so many practices, community events where players or coaches donate their time to help the community, etc., and not just the games.While the day credential is just a small piece of paper stock, usually with the local sports team logo, where the media director has signed off on it and filled in the blanks good for that one day, a season credential is laminated and includes your photo so security can match the credential to the face preventing unauthorized use.Obviously the real question is how can one obtain a professional sports credential? First, you have to prove you are good in sports photography to a news organization through a great portfolio, and if they have a need for another photographer, there is a possibility you will at least get started with a temporary day credential. Once you prove your abilities to that organization, then they will seek out season credentials for you should they have a need for another sports photographer.It’s all about proving to the photo editor of a potential publication or news service that you are qualified and that begins with a great portfolio which comes through experience and practicing your sports photography skills at non-professional sporting events.You have to pay your dues as professional sports photographer to gain your credentials as the access to shoot at a professional sports event is not issued to just anyone—so get out there and practice locally, then build your portfolio and take it to your local newspaper and see if you can at least “string” for them which is your starting point for a publication.
