Can a non-cs graduate earn a MS degree in computer science? How would I prepare for this?

Yes, definitely but it has a catch with it.Before dwelling further on this question another question comes to our mind why a non cs background student would want to get into Computer ScienceAlthough a non-CS graduate can pursue an MS in CS, how easy or difficult it would be to get an admit would partly depend on the stream you had taken in your undergrad. There are many students who have done their Bachelors in Electronics, Electronics and Communications/Telecommunications, Information Technology etc. and went on to pursue their Masters in CS. This is because transition from Electronics to CS is not very difficult, as there are a few common subjects that are taught. As a result, students from Electronics background are also able to develop a decent foundation in the basics of CS. Also, within CS, there are domains which are inclined somewhat towards the Electronics and Communications part of CS, hence an Electronics graduate would certainly be a good fit.On the other hand, switching from branches which are not at all related to CS, like Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Biomed, Manufacturing etc. is usually more challenging as there are no common subjects as such. Also, CS doesn’t really have a domain wherein a core Mech/Civil engineer may fit.Irrespective of whether you are from the former category or the latter, there are certain ways which can indeed help you build a profile inclined towards CS.It is advisable to do a couple of projects related to CS which can help reflect your knowledge and interest in the same. You can also act as an assistant to a professor working on a CS project, so that you can get experience as well as a letter of recommendation.Additionally, there are various certification courses that you can opt for, because a certificate will add strength to your profile. You should consider learning about Data Structures, Analysis of Algorithms, JAVA, C/C++ and Database Management Systems, as these make an integral part of CS.Also, if you can do an internship if your preferred domain of CS (even in a small company or a startup), it will further add to your profile and the internship experience will also give you confidence.Another way to orient your profile towards CS is to use platforms like hackerrank wherein you will get to develop your coding and problem solving skills one step at a time.If you’re able to build a strong base in CS, then there’s a good chance of getting accepted in a decent university even if your undergrad is not in CS.If you’re in your undergrad, a cardinal approach is to take courses that are equivalent to prerequisite subjects and are likely to give you a common platform with students from CS background. Undergrad subjects such as Mathematics (Calculus & Statistics), Data Structure, Algorithm Analysis, Programming languages, Theory of Computation and Operating Systems are desired from non-CS applicants. Ability to crack code in languages such as Python, Javascript, Java, etc. could boost your resume. Some universities require a minimum score in certain prerequisite subjects. When applying, applicants must include a cover letter or an essay (as is required by certain universities) that is a precise account of their professional accomplishments and outlines the purpose of their course of action (some institutions call it the “Statement of Purpose” or SOP). Use this as an opportunity to convince the selection committee of the skills and ideas you would bring to the table with your non-CS background.Translate applications to success with compelling Letters of Recommendation as they are highly regarded in high ranking US universities and seen as means of adding credibility to the application. It is good to ask your professors, academicians, managers, etc. whom you have worked closely with to establish plausibility and thus reflect your genuine interest in the respective university’s program through their testimonials. All the candidates are required to present a GRE score that may vary from college to college. High score in the quant section will position you better for securing an admit.A relevant IELTS/ TOEFL score to measure your proficiency in English. Applicants are advised to confirm with individual schools regarding their cut offs.Relevant interdisciplinary research projects and 2+ years of work experience in Computers/Software industry is considered a great plus This will help offset the lack of a formal CS undergraduate degree.Research papers in prestigious journals would be a great way to demonstrate your interest and caliber in CS.Contribution to open source projects such as Google Summer of Code, Rails Girl Summer of Code, Apache projects, etc. are immensely popular and likely to give you first hand exposure to software development. Some experts and professors suggest creating your own mobile app or a large system and putting it on Github. Competitive programming is also helpful in establishing your caliber.Practical Tips to increase the chancesFirst & foremost, visit the website of the university you wish to apply to and download the complete application checklist for referral. Most universities dedicate a page to application procedure/prerequisites to make it easy for students to apply. One on one communication with the concerned university’s professor (CS department) could tilt the scale in your favour. Get in touch via email or call them to make sure you have what it needs to win them over. All universities advise students to submit their application well before time.Check if the university offers scholarships that could reduce your financial burden. Higher studies in US is no mean task and a little bit of leeway in form of scholarships could bring lot of relief. Most private universities have scholarship programs so make sure you have that aspect thoroughly checked.Certain universities like NYU, UPenn offer prep courses exclusively designed for non-CS students.Gather an idea about the undergrad CS subjects taught in the university of your interest. The subjects are usually listed on the university’s website under the concerned department. It would help ecide what subjects you may be required to take before applying.Make sure you check the FAQ page of your desired universities. This single page carries enough information to answer most of your questions.Get in touch with the desired university’s CS grad students to gather information.Keep your Transcripts intact, ready and your CV up to dateUniversities in USA offering MS in CS to Non-CS StudentsThe chances of non-CS students getting admission to Masters in CS in top universities is tough, but possible. However, there is no need to get disheartened as nearly all universities/colleges in US have fairly reputed Computer science programs regardless of the school’s overall rank. Most universities welcome non-CS students for an MS in Computer Science. There are very few that do not entertain students from other background to enrol in their CS program and to get a list of those schools is not easy. Instead, we have compiled a list of schools that are reputed and invite non-CS students to apply to their MS in CS program.UCLA.Stanford University.University of Chicago.Yale University.NC State University.Georgia Tech College of Computing. It should come as a relief to some that despite program rankings, MS CS graduates are in great demand and do not have to struggle to find well paid jobs. As per Obama White House archives, the industry is likely to see a deficit of 1 million computer graduates by 2020 with 1.4 million computer science jobs but only 400,000 graduates available to fill them.Hope this helps. It gives the international student a lot of options to choose from so many universities. While selecting universities, it is advisable that you keep 8-10 universities in your application checklist. Also, you should start researching for the universities at least 15 months prior to the beginning of the session. If you are interested in applying for Fall, make sure you check out for universities between May and June. That leaves you enough time to go through your exams and arrange for the admission requirements accordingly.Check deadlines:Admissions for Masters courses at Canadian universities usually start in September though some programmes also open their applications in May and July. For schools, which accept students in September, deadlines range from the fall to winter.Eligibility:A majority of the universities in Canada require the applicant to have 16 years of education or a four- year Bachelor’s degree. Why do chartered accountants want to join the field of information security?

Excuse me! I am not a CA yet nor am I employed in the infosec field. But I take offense to the fact that you mentioned that these CAs who work in this sector lack core technical knowledge. You are probably demeaning the brain behind tally, SAP etc. These softwares have been the bread and butter of almost all chartered accountants. Now let us come back to your question. Well who developed tally? Or SAP? Of course it was some very smart team of coders who came up with the idea of an erp. They knew how to code an erp but they lacked the aforementioned core technical knowledge this is where we the CAs come in. We helped give the knowledge and now we do a checklist audit to ensure that these systems are running as per the applicable FRF and standards. But you think that checklist audit is a trivial task right? But imagine what happens when these systems aren't audited. It can make minor errors like application of wrong sections in tax calculation (taking 35AD instead of 80IA/IB) both sections are quite similar and only an expert with core technical knowledge can differentiate between the two. Or it can make major errors like wrong FRF( how many software developers or bcom grads can differentiate between the revised schedule vi in the old act and the currently applicable schedule iii)So this is why many CAs who have good, nay outstanding technical knowledge are required in this field.Personal note to the question writer: sorry for the tone taken in this answer I realized it subsequently. But in my defence I have been studying isca for the last 5 consecutive days and someone says its of no use then it hurts :P
