They’re none too keen on the idea of going back to hypersleep, and they just happen to spot a transmission coming from a previously unsurveyed planet, which, by amazing coincidence, seems to be entirely habitable.Rather than go on to the well surveyed, quite well understood planet that they are supposed to be colonising, they make the rather alarming decision to go to this totally unknown planet instead.Okay, so it’s stretching credibility a bit at this stage, but not movie-breakingly so.Where it gets bloody daft is that they land on a planet they know to be life-bearing, and what sort of environmental protection do they bring?A warm jacket.They’re on a life-bearing planet, with god-knows-what kind of alien bacteria, viruses, creepy crawlies, toxins, allergens and on and on, and they head out to the surface without so much as a gas mask. Not only that, but they’re introducing their own alien biota to this new world, which is an action potentially capable of total ecocide and against every bit of basic protocol in all space programs.This is the moment where the film descends into farce. Every other disaster stems from this crowning moment of unbelievable stupidity. There is simply no way any space crew, particularly colonists with a super-intelligent android on crew, would do something so bone-headed en masse.Sure, there are plenty of other credibility-stretching moments, but this tops the lot for me.
