PDF Editor FAQ

Has someone felt absolutely worthless in companies like Infosys/TCS/Wipro/CTS?

I am approximately 2 months fresh out of this situation and I know how it feels.Programming is my passion and I love to code. I cannot compromise for anything which hinders my skill development even when I am the sole bread-earner for my family.I joined TCS in November 2015 and resigned from it in September 2017. During my studies I used to dream about a job in TCS. It was my aim to get a job over here. And I got one in 5th semester of my Masters. I remember, that day was the happiest day of my life being a part of India’s largest IT company. After completing my Masters I had to wait over one year to get a call letter from the company. During this waiting period, I had a lot of problem as my family was in financial crisis and my father hardly had income to manage all the expenses solely. I tried to apply for a lot of temporary job but local companies would not accept me as I had uncertainty over when will I get a call from TCS.Finally I got a call and that too in my home state. When I joined TCS, I was given a 2-months training program known as ILP. It was a good period for me and I had a zeal within me that my career is shaping up well. Finally when I completed my training, I was assigned a project. While on-boarding I was not completely informed that it is going to be completely testing project by project manager. He tricked me into word game and convinced me to join the project.I joined the project but I hardly had anything to work. There was repetitive test cycles in an Excel document that were to be performed and screenshots were to be reported to the seniors.I got frustrated after some duration on the project and asked my manager to give me some technical work where my programming skills are tested. He just gave me fake words and more days passed on just doing nothing.Luckily I found a freelancing client who gave me quality programming work. I made a complete product for him and he was really very impressed with me. He offered me a full-time job but I didn’t show him much interest. This was good for me as I earned extra money from freelancing and my programming skills were also being polished. At the same time, when I used to get ready for my office each there was a question in my mind “why am I going there?”. One fine day I decided to take on my manager. I told I wanted to get release from this project. I am interested in other technologies and my interest is not being served here. To which that crap replied that the technologies I am interested in is nowhere and are out-dated. Immediately I said him to google some fact and sharpen his knowledge. He got a bit annoyed and told me you have to be here and you have no choice.Anyhow I completed few more months in the same project doing nothing. I was not able to take any firm decision on switching another job as my father’s income was completely stopped and I was left solely to do everything for my family. I was forced to work. Then, I decided something has to be done otherwise I will lose my career direction. I asked my freelancing client whether he was still interested in employing me for full day work. He said yes. I decided this is it. I went to my manager and fought for a final time. I said them to give me release from the project. To the extent that matter went up to Delivery Head of my location for the project and I even fought with him in his cabin. They didn’t give me release this time too.I took few days time, gave a thought to all the available options. Asked my client how much he was ready to pay me if I gave him full-time. He offered me handsome amount of salary. That was the final nail in the coffin. I decided to quit TCS job.Today I am very relaxed and happy about my decision. I am working with my client on my technology of interest. Also I working on my own products that I am deciding to sale in the market.During my TCS journey I learnt what my passion meant to me. I realized my potential and my tolerance.NEVER GIVE UP ON WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK FOR THAT EXTRA BIT.

How can I improve time management?

The IT Manager for our business unit dropped into my office and looked nervous.“Hey Ian, just wanted you to know that we are aware of the issues with reporting and we’re working on it.”I had no idea what he was talking about.“Reporting issues?”“Yeah, our data warehouse is having issues, so your standard reports haven’t been going out for the past three weeks.”“Which reports?”He showed me a long list of nearly 50 reports. Some were measuring things we hadn’t paid attention to in years.“Who typically receives these reports and how often?”He showed me an even longer list of managers, assistants, and front line staff.“Some reports go out daily and others weekly.”“OK, thanks for the heads up.”After he left my office, I made a few phone calls. Starting with my direct reports, I asked if it was creating problems that our standard reports weren’t arriving on time.To a person, they had no idea what I was talking about.I assumed that I was starting too high in the organization and next called folks who reported to these executives.Only a few people noticed that the reports weren’t coming. I pressed them on how vital the reports were.“Not much but I check them just to make sure. A few reports require an update from me, so I have to fill out fields in the system.”“How does it help you to complete those fields?”“Not sure. I assume someone is doing something with the information.”It’s Just The Way We’ve Always Done ItI call this phenomenon “task creep,” which is prevalent in large companies and your personal life alike.A problem arises in business, and a process is put in place. That process is useful for a short time. The problem slowly goes away, but the tasks added to fix the initial problem remain in place. It could be something as simple as opening, reviewing and commenting on a simple report. This task might take someone 30 seconds and in itself, is not a big deal.Leverage that task by 200 people doing the same thing every week and you start to have a bigger problem. Multiply that task by 100 other mundane tasks, and you’re wasting 1–2 hours a week on items that drive no productivity benefits.I wasn’t shocked that so many reports were going out regularly. I was surprised that three weeks went by and no one seemed to notice.Create A “Stop Doing List”I walked down to our IT Manager and told him to quit working on the problem. We would stop sending those reports until someone screamed to me that we needed to reinstate them.I asked him to make a list of any other reporting or automated interruptions that our systems were sending out.Our CRM software was notification-crazy. Everything seemed to be an emergency, so all of our front line employees had hundreds of notifications all the time. They just got used to ignoring these notifications. If everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. Why were people being notified about everything? The software was set up like that from the beginning. Like most software rollouts, we created a small user group that helped test the software and design an implementation process. They enthusiastically overdesigned the system to use every new “bell and whistle.” If one person in a group of 10 users felt like a notification would be helpful, it was approved. It cost nothing to the business to initially turn on an alert. Then hundreds started getting that alert who didn’t need it.We started killing alerts and notifications left and right. My only rule was that to reinstate a report or alert; we needed a large group of users to complain. If not, it went away for good.Companies don’t do this type of thing often enough and it starts with owners and executives. Unless senior leaders create a safe zone where employees can suggest killing off sacred cows, people will continue doing what they’re told and collecting a paycheck.23 Minutes and 15 SecondsGloria Mark is a professor at the University of California, Irvine. Her team experimented to learn the real cost of an interruption by studying knowledge workers at IT and finance companies over a week. They found that people switch activities every three minutes and five seconds and roughly half of the distractions are self-inflicted.Additionally, they found that it took an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to return to the original task each time they were distracted. Very few people hit a period of flow work during a typical working day.You are working on a project, and a Facebook alert diverts your attention. You cruise around your feed and while your phone is unlocked, jump into Instagram and then LinkedIn.While you’re in the social media neighborhood, you read a Quora article from Ian Mathews, another colossal waste of time. You put your phone down and look back at your computer to see that you have seven unread emails in Outlook. You reply, forward, delete and move those messages.Twenty-three minutes and 15 seconds later, you dive back into your project for another three minutes and five seconds of uninterrupted work.Don’t Trust Your WillpowerIf I want to stop eating peanut butter, I don’t trust my ability to pass on the jar of Jif. I like peanut butter too much.I quit buying it and putting it in my house. Out of sight, out of mind.If I need to get into a flow state for anything, I do the same with potential distractions.Switch to “Work Offline” in Microsoft Outlook, or whatever email software you use. I get distracted as quickly as anyone by a new email, so I typically open emails in batches, on my time and when I decide they are important.Delete social media off of your phone during working hours, or forever. 90% of my interaction with social media is on a web browser. I don’t need a LinkedIn update every time someone posts or likes an article. Once you get into your smartphone, you might as well write off 30–45 minutes if you have Instagram, Facebook, Quora, Medium, Twitter and LinkedIn waiting for you with red numbered notifications.Turn off Notifications on every app. There is just nothing important enough on social media that you need to know right away. The same goes for email, text, and Whatsapp.Make a Stop Doing list. Take a hard look at your time and figure out what is stopping you from completing an assignment every 3 minutes and 5 seconds. If it is a regular interruption, find a way to eliminate it. If it is a task at work that feels redundant, talk to your boss about it. You will be surprised by how much crap people waste time on, assuming their boss wants it. Managers are often happy to eliminate redundant work that is keeping you from being productive.I started writing this article while I was in the middle of reviewing graphic design candidates, which is painstakingly boring work. While doing some research on Gloria Mark for this article, I fell into a wormhole on NFL free agency, wasting more time. Two hours later, I am about to submit this article and get back to reviewing candidates, unless I can figure out another creative way of procrastinating . . . hey, is that peanut butter?Mmmh, peanut butter.

What is the fundamental function of a manager in an organization, and how does information technology help?

Managers have several functions and they are:Planning: predetermining expected quantity and quality of chores that must be doneOrganization: specification of ways and means for execution of each planned choreLeading and motivation: stimulation of employees to achieve expected resultsControlling: evaluate if realized chores meet expectations in quantity and qualityHuman resorces managment: responsibility for all of the functions that deal with the needs and activities of the organization's peopleConsidering the above five functions of a manager, let’s learn how to use of technology in management considering the responsibilities of the manager:Use technology to manage information: Since managers have to use information during the process of planning and organizing organizational activities, they have to use technology to manage this information and access it at any time. Using technological systems like (MIS) management information systems, managers will be in position to execute important decisions and actions required in business growth and development. By definition, a management information system (MIS) is a system that provides periodic, predetermined, and ad-hoc reporting capabilities. Reports generated by MIS systems summarize information to support decision making tasks. MIS’s can provide reports to a manager in various ways. These reports can be periodic, summarized, exceptions, comparative and ad-hoc. MIS, generate these reports from a database of transaction processing systems (TPS) and customer integration system (CIS) , the information delivered is always summarized for easy interpretation and this helps managers in creating business plans basing on verified data.Use technology to manage business contacts: Managers or business owners can use contact management systems to organize and manage business contacts. These contacts can be for customers, suppliers, or business partners. As a business grows and expands, also the number of contacts for customers and suppliers will increase, this will demand for a technological system, to help you keep these contacts and retrieve them at any time. You can start by organizing your contacts; separate your customers from your suppliers or partners. You should always update the contact list of your customers, because some stay, while others go. With an organized customer database, business owners can contact their customers at once and suggest deals or discounts which in return improve customer service yet it also saves the business owner or manager time. Bulk email senders can import contacts from your database, and they also have email templates which you can edit and contact all your customers in just one minute.Use technology for human resource management: After the planning process, the business owner will have to execute their goals. During this process, they will need human resource which will help in accomplishing specific tasks. Some of this labor can be skilled labor or semi-skilled labor. The manager or business owner can use technological tools like the internet to post jobs on online job portals. After this process, they can use technological tools to illustrate tasks for each employee and also use technology to monitor the performance of each employee.Source: Use of Technology In Management - Use of Technology
