Through the 70's and 80′s there was a regional show called It's Academic. High schools sent teams of three students to compete against each other in a quiz format. Questions were grouped into math and science, English and history, and general knowledge which often went into weird territory.Having really no knowledge of math and science, I was headhunted by the faculty advisors and administration to be the Weird General Knowledge girl. I was one of the art geeks who spent a lot of time talking about things now considered New Age-y, and had a reputation for reading things off the beaten path, for the sake of learning it.We were teamed against Williamsville South and Royalton-Hartland. South in particular was an intimidating opponent, because the village of Williamsville had a reputation of being wealthy and exclusive, while Alden Central was ridiculed as Hick High in Farm Country.High was the operative word here.I was nervous.And ganja grew wild just outside the village.This was the 80's and everyone and his mother was smoking herb then. I took a toke, you know, for medicinal purposes.And I rocked that taping!I nailed the standard English questions, the mythology, the funky trivia. I translated a sentence from “Alice in Wonderland” that appeared in Esperanto, a language that at 16 I didn't know was an actual thing.And we won in an unexpected landslide victory, moving into championship playoffs.I was so stoned! You could have told me that three-headed space aliens were bombing downtown Buffalo with Cheez Whiz and I would have sailed blissfully past.I never told anyone for another 20 years that I had used perormance-enhancing botanicals, until I began seeing a man who'd gone to Williamsville South. I broke my silence to his family: “Yes, I smoked pot. I inhaled it, too.”After a few stunned moments his sister paid me the only compliment ever delivered by his family (that did not involve weight loss): “Good job, those popular kids needed to be taken down a peg.”Edit: I do not now smoke marijuana, and have not in decades.
