This is a drilling simutalor, used for training personnel for drilling industry. Must specifically, it is commonly used for well control training and certification.If, during drilling or completion, some oil or gas enters into the well, the well must be controlled. Failing to do so can lead to a blowout (total loss of control, which can lead to fire and oil spill).Thus, key personnel (drillers and supervisors) onboard the rig are required to regularly (each two years) go through well control training. For 13 years i worked in the drilling industry, it was pretty hard, very much a male dominant industry, hard, long hours, heavy work and pretty dirty. This was on jack-ups (semi mobile offshore rigs)In 12 hours sometimes you wouldn't get a tea break depending on what was happening so you took what you could. As some ex military once explained, it was like the basic training in the army but for the rest of your life and they quit after 2 days which was quite weird.Anyway, to the question. If you were lucky enough to get a tea break you had to measure a 15 minute break in some way because if one particular OIM (offshore installation manager.. the big boss) was in the tea room/boot room he would time you but very discreetly. One guy came in, covered in mud, tired, made himself a cup of tea and sat down. He glanced at his watch and remained silent. You never talked whilst the OIM was present because he would mentally register everything you said so saying nothing was best. The lad lit a cigarette, took a sip of his tea and looked at his watch. That was enough, he was sacked on the spot. After a couple of us raised our objection we were threatened with our jobs too.After that we measured 15 minutes by smoking 2 cigarettes and making one hot drink. Makes me laugh these days when people think they have their job hard.
