What is the strangest moment/scene/act happened in your wedding?

My live-in nanny Jennifer moved from Oregon to Yuma, Arizona to attend college and take advantage being near her fiancé, Ryan, stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS). Jennifer was energetic and very Mormon, interviewed quite well and had impeccable references. If you are thinking this is all going to turn out bad; you would be 100% wrong. Jennifer was a dream nanny, excellent student, exceptional teacher, my confidant, unapologetically pretty, my foster children loved her and her voice... she could sing like an angel. Jennifer and I are still in touch on social media.Jennifer moved in with me the fall of 1995 to begin as a nanny. She was so looking forward to caring for Brittney, attending a new semester at Arizona Western College (AWC) and finally spending some time with her fiancé. There was a two-day registration window for her to sign up in January 1996 for the spring semester classes. On the first day at registration, when she was signing up for a choir class, the teacher informed Jennifer about a music scholarship that would cover all her expenses. Jennifer would have to audition for the scholarship. As I said, Jennifer had the voice of an angel and she easily passed the vocal audition for the scholarship. The kicker; the music scholarship was reserved for Arizona residents (2 years or more) or family members of military personnel only; so, she didn’t qualify. Worse yet, the deadline for qualifying for the scholarship and class registration was the very next day.Jennifer has never been the type of person to sulk or quit; she was undaunted. She certainly couldn’t qualify for the Arizona resident part; she’d only lived in Arizona for six months. She told her counselor, “If I need to be a military family member, then I will be a military family member by tomorrow.” Jennifer called her fiancé Ryan, told him about the scholarship and announced that they were getting married NOW so she could qualify for the scholarship. When I came home that day, Jennifer explained about the scholarship and she would need a few hours off to get married. I was absolutely impressed by her resourcefulness. Not once did she address this as a problem; and, she actually reveled in the opportunity the challenge represented.Ryan, who was still working on converting to Mormonism, was fully on-board with the wedding plan. He and Jennifer could have that big religious wedding for their families later. They just wouldn’t tell them they had gotten married already. Since Ryan was in the Marines, he needed approval from his commanding officer first. Ryan managed to get it done right away and meet Jennifer at Yuma County Clerk’s Office to get their marriage license.Thank goodness Arizona does not require blood tests; Jennifer is needle-phobic and jokes that a blood test might have been a deal-breaker. Jennifer couldn’t have picked a more perfect town for a quickie marriage. Yuma has quite the reputation for many movie stars flying in from California for a quick marriage; including, Loretta Young, Claudette Colbert, Alice Fay, Mary Astor, Jean Harlow, John Barrymore, Errol Flynn and even cowboy Tom Mix… and more. The only wedding officiant they could find on such short notice was a judge at City Hall. His docket was full but Jennifer and Ryan somehow convinced that judge to perform the marriage ceremony at 9am the next morning; scholarship and college registration deadline day. I was impressed how quickly Jennifer got it all arranged in a single day. When Jennifer wants to get something done; there is no stopping her. With no advanced planning for her wedding, Jennifer certainly hadn’t planned for a wedding dress. Ryan could get away with wearing his Marine Corps dress uniform. Jennifer began to go through her everyday-go-to-school outfits and she modeled in front of me, “Do you think this looks wedding-enough?” No matter how resourceful Jennifer had already been; she really had nothing that looked anything like a wedding dress. In my mind; a woman needs a wedding dress on her wedding day. So, I told her I’d buy her a dress as a wedding present. Although it was already late in the day, we immediately went shopping. We stopped near one wedding shop and she motioned for me to keep driving. She insisted, “This is a small event, no need for expensive.” Jennifer got so lucky; she ended up finding the cutest little white lacy wedding dress on a JC Penny’s discount rack for under $40.00. We couldn’t believe it; it was like it was waiting for her and it couldn’t have been more perfect. On the morning of the 2nd day of college registration, at 9am, she and Ryan stood before the judge at Yuma City Hall and got married. One of Ryan’s friends and I were the witnesses. We took Polaroid insta-print pictures of the ceremony and also a posed-picture with the judge. They had no real wedding rings, but did exchange a couple of Cracker-Jack rings at the ceremony. Ah, such a tribute to young love at its finest. Now most bright-eyed wedding couples would have a big celebration and then head out for an exciting honeymoon. Well, that’s what’s very different about Ryan and Jennifer. Ryan immediately reported back to duty at the MCAS. Jennifer, still wearing her wedding dress, with a copy of a marriage license in one hand, marriage certificate in the other and backup pictures of the marriage ceremony, drove with all her determination out to AWC to capture her scholarship.Jennifer’s first stop at the college was the music teacher where she got her scholarship stamped qualified and approved; Victory! Then she stood in line at the registration office, still wearing her wedding dress, and finished registering for her college classes; Victory!Whenever I hear the expression, “failure is not an option,” it always reminds me of Jennifer. You gotta love Jennifer.

Which college is better, VIT or Amrita? Why?

First of all the selection of college is based on one's priorities. One college may be better for one and worse for another. First set your priorities. As a alumini of Amrita School of Engineering Coimbatore, I will just talk about it.Amrita has been labelled as a religious institute by many which is not completely true(except the few times when they conduct Homams when problems occur and when they expect you to read funny fairy tales about the "miracles" of Amma in your first year cultural paper). Some may even ask me why I didn't mention the compulsory trip to Kollam to meet the chancellor in person and seek her blessings. But I remember many incidences when the trip turned out to be some funny entertaining moments for many. Compulsory Yoga classes??. Dude find Adhi Narayanan sir first. Though the name of Amma will haunt you everywhere you talk about your college and constantly put you in a situation belittled by your friends, once you are out of the college people do recognize the institution. That is a good point ofcourse. And to add up to the belittling part in recent times when you introduce yourself as a student of Amrita, there is a good chance people will ask "Chennai Amrita???" which is a catering college in chennai. Ya! I have faced it several time too.The college has a very pleasant atmosphere during the days of admission which attracts many parents.(Still thinking how they found such a mystical place.) The college reputation as a strict institute becomes the second most attracting point for the parents. I would like to tell them that the restriction are mostly concerned about the entry and exit. There is just a very moderate restriction inside the campus. But the absence of a decent food court or a place to chill makes it a way more of a hell inside the college. Uniform? Dont worry buddy you will love it if you are a hostellite. The infrastructure in amrita is quite good. But I bet 85% of the students know nothing about the infrastructures they have. When I entered the institute in 2011, I was told that Amrita has the only super-computer in south india (PARAM 10000). but it took me 2 years to find where it was. The Face-palming moment was that it was there right where we walked from day one (in the main building). Believe me guys! there is a super computer in the college. If you still dont believe make a visit to the main building.Professors are really talented and boast Masters and PhD degrees. But still no one knows why there are 100s of guys doing re-apperance, re-register, supplimentary exams, run-time courses, contact courses every semester. I was told that it was a way to improve our education standards which I never understood completely. I strongly recommend not to try to understand the evaluating methods which even the professors are not fully familiar with. Once you are loaded with arrears(I am referring to you who is reading this article, most probably u will need this), stop pestering your academic coordinator asking question about the registration for next semester. Just go to your senior with the most arrears. He is the only one who knows about all the rules, offices, subjects, professors, staffs, wardens and even the securities. without his support you will never clear those arrears on time. You should definitely respect him as he is the one who sacrificed his life to update himself about every rules, even ones which were introduced last week and removed today. If you are very eager, hard working, sincere, dedicated to represent a universtiy in any sports event, Amrita is just the right place. You will be put through a talent search in the first year where you will be asked to spell out the name of your game and the best one to spell it correctly will be selected. (Almost just that!). When you are so geared up and come to the practice the next day you will see the largest ground in the university(kind of 'the only') mostly filled with guys mostly playing cricket. And don't think you are disturbing their practice as the college team would be practicing catching at a corner of the ground.Placements. The only thing that everyone cares. Its obviously good. You could have seen amrita's name in the list of most number of placements in a single campus interview. Its actually one of the best in the state in placements. But if you are the one thinking about the 1700 placements for around 2000 B.techs in the campus, think again. B.Techs, M.techs, MCAs, MScs of all the campuses are brought in for this interview. So you have fight your way in. And remember the placement records are only about the "eligible" students.Such a long one. This is what happens when an Engineer has no other work and internet in his hands. There is a life beyond Engineering. For ones who really aspire Engineering, Amrita is just right. If you want a degree behind your name in your wedding invitation( like the most!) please visit amrita only at the night of "Eventide" every year. So long folks and All the very best.

What are some of the funniest punishments ever given in the US Marine Corps ?

Okay, this may or may not be funny but here goes….I joined the Marine Corps in 2005, I went through 1st Battalion Bravo Company at Parris Island my SDI was an MP so naturally he singled out the recruits that were signed up as such, my Kill hat DI, told us that if we ever pulled him over he’d make us eat the ticket book, fast forward 4 years and this DI happened to pass me while I was running radar in a School Zone, he was clocked at 55 in a 25, lights and siren go on and I proceed to conduct a traffic stop, run the plate through dispatch nothing comes back that raises any indication that this was my DI, walk to the back of the suspect vehicle check to see if the trunk is open, then walk up to the driver side window, I ask for Military ID, Drivers License, Registration and Proof of Insurance. I get all that and just happen to look at the picture on the Military ID, instantly recognize the picture, without a word I walk back to my patrol car and begin writing a ticket, walk back to the driver side window and explain the citation to him, when it got time to explain my information at the bottom of the ticket I stated “here at the bottom is my information, my name Cpl Eckman, 2nd Plt, PMO, MCAS New River.” (Now knowing DI’s see thousands of recruits) I asked if he remembered me, he looked at me for a while but nothing clicked for him until I said our Plt number, he then proceeded to turn the brightest shade of red I’ve seen any Latino do, then asked if he wanted to make me eat the ticket book I was holding, he said no, then explained to him that he would need to attend the court date on the back of the ticket (20mph over the speed limit was mandatory revocation of driving privileges on Marine Corps Installations). Court date arrives and I’m there in all my gear and the Traffic Court Judge asks me about the details of the stop before my former DI stepped into the room, I explained he was traveling eastbound at a rate of 55pmh according to radar through a School Zone, traffic stop was conducted and contact made with the driver, to which I said that I recognized the driver as my DI from Boot Camp, the Traffic Court Judge (He was a 1st Sgt) interrupted me and asked if he heard me right, I said yes he did, so he calls in my DI (a SSgt) and proceeds to read off the charge and punishment for the violation and asked me if there was anything else I’d like to add, I told the Judge that I would consider to let the SSgt go with a warning if he ate a ticket book, to which boh lookef at me like I had a horn growing out of my forehead, I let the SSgt explain the reasoning behind the request, the look the 1st Sgt gave him was priceless, but I said let him off with 6 points on his driving record and no suspension of driving privileges. The DI and I shook hands and headed out of the courtroom he thanked me for not nailing him to the wall, but I did tell him if he ever sped through that School Zone again I wouldn’t be so lenient.Like I said may or may not be funny, but not many can say the pulled over their DI’s and gave them a ticket.
