We used desk duty for two reasons, and the tasks performed were dependant on the basis for the assignment.The first group of officers assigned to desk duty was what we called "The walking wounded." Some officers would report a minor duty injury such as a strain or pulled muscle, which occurred while on duty. Many doctors would take the officer out of work for a month or more while the officer fully healed. It could be a fight call where the officer was videotaped using a level of force that appeared excessive. Time would be needed to investigate the matter properly, so we would assign the officer to desk duty, keeping them away from all public contact. These officers would be assigned to report in civilian clothing and complete assigned tasks at the police station. It could be assisting the evidence custodian or helping the forensics section.If the officer were cleared, then they would be placed back on regular duty once the facts quelled the initial public response. Reports have suggested that around 17% of the total sexual harassment cases include men.
