PDF Editor FAQ

Why do people keep saying Japan is "technologically behind" just because they use faxes when everything else is modern by world standards especially infrastructure?

I’ve answered that question in French recently, despite the question being asked the other way around. And that’s funny.I have the feeling most people outside Japan think and say that Japan is ahead, not behind. While most foreigners living in Japan say Japan is behind.Well, who would you trust ? Those who have been living here for decades, or those who see Japan only through anime, movies, and pop culture ?Japan using fax machines is indeed a very good example. What put them behind is not the technology. Fax machines are quite impressive these days. No, what put them behind is the reasons they use fax machines: “because we have been doing so with much success for decades and we do not see any reason to change”. Well, when I see how much additional work it creates in companies in comparison to emails for example, it’s not just about using fax machines, it’s about efficiency. An answer that you would get for most things that foreigners think are odd. Before giving some factual examples, lets precise that Japan is indeed quite ahead regarding its infrastructures. That’s mainly due to very expensive services (phone, internet, train, etc.). It’s easy to improve infrastructure when you have money. Now, the question is, is Japan modern (ahead) in its use of the technology beyond infrastructures? And of course, the answer is no. They have the tech, they just don’t use it.Internet: well. That’s the leading marketplace in japan: http://www.rakuten.co.jpAnd yes, Japanese have a different sense of design, but I know a few people working there, and I can attest that the code behind is as terrible as what you see on front.Japan has one of the lowest, if not the lowest average income in some specific high tech sectors such as… IT/Development. It really doesn’t help.Insulation… god, it’s horrible. All that electricity used to warm a single room through reversible air conditioner, while all other rooms of the house are freezing.Nuclear energy in a country with so much risks, while there are so much potential for sustainable energies. It got better now, but phones… how resistant Japan was to the development of smartphone. To the point the completely missed the opportunity and left it to Samsung.Sharp, Sony, and most major Japanese tech companies are on the edge. They are losing the competition because of a lack of innovation. The 21st century not being about building reliable devices, but innovative devices. The use of DVDs… yes… DVDs. How many times have I been asked to burn movies on a DVDs instead of putting them on Youtube or on a USB storage. The music and film industry. Japan is one of the very few countries still mostly selling CDs and DVDs, with very very few streaming services available (well, the only really good streaming services in Japan are non Japanese).Japan has no social network (people use Twitter and FB. Mixi failed).Japan has no service that allow to charge a non Japanese credit card instantaneously.Japan still processes all international bank transfers manually.Japan implemented a “unique citizen number” (my number) to better track administrative stuff a few years ago, and it’s not working (making virtually impossible to automatically match one’s tax returns with the tax returns of the company that employs him…)Paperwork. Japanese often say “Japan loves paper”. Yes, it does! That’s probably the most shocking and bothering thing for most Westerners living in Japan. And so on and so forth. All in all, Japan’s productivity is very low. Automation did wonders in the west, and Japan is really behind on this. In the past, it wasn’t such an issue, because Japan had workers and it allowed to keep the unemployment rate quite low, but now… with not enough workers and a dropping production capacity ?Japan was ahead for quite a long time. It’s not anymore. But we’re talking about what… 10 or 20 years ? It’s nothing. Japan could catch up pretty fast if it wanted to. It’s just not easy with an aging population and all the problems it comes with within the constrict of a very rigid society. They’ll wake up and catch up eventually, as they always did throughout history. That’s what I chose to believe.PS: please, don’t assume that this post is a judgment. It’s not. It’s just how it is. And I actually think the current situation is interesting because full of opportunities to improve things.

I appreciated that they have a great free option (a huge necessity for my non-profit!) I liked the appearance of the final form; a lot of the other builder tools created forms that looked dated and clunky.
