I am not sure what you mean by contours of the land. But if you mean, do they dig ditches, or flatten hills, the answer is no, not really. In fact having lived in Oklahoma for the first 25 years of my life, I saw mass destruction, and weird things like wood, and pieces of straw embedded in concrete, or concrete posts that were bent but no broken, but except for uprooting trees and plants, and mass destruction of structures there was little effect on the ground itself; well, except for the torrential rain that could flood the area and cause what we called “gully washers” in the many creeks in the area. But for the tornado or twister, itself, to illustrate the actual effect on the ground, I was told if I were ever caught out in the field and could not make it to a safe place in time, find a creek or some spot something that allowed me to be below ground level and take refuge there. The concept is that the twisting, spiraling upward motion is what does the damage, but the direct lifting power at ground level is not all that strong; presumably not strong enough to lift something situated below ground level.
