What did you do when an aggressive driver got out of their car and wanted to fight?
Story time:Not about an aggressive driver but an aggressive "not gonna pay you what I owe you, driver”Near Chicago, l lived in Evanston. I legally parked my car on a busy road. I don't usually park there but I must have come home late and that spot was the only nearby spot to park.Next morning I come out to my car to go to work and I find the ENTIRE driver's side of my car from back to front smashed. There was a note under the windshield wipers with a name, number, insurance company and a ”sorry”.Husband calls the insurance company and finds that she has been dropped for non-payment. The insurance company is one of those cheap insurance places. So the driver that smashed my car and did major damage is uninsured.Well— her non-existent insurance company will not pay so I have to get my insurance company to pay. Trouble is — I have a $500 deductible. So husband contacts the girl that smashed my car and tells her she needs to pay me the $500 for my deductible. He can be pretty damn forceful when needed.I reported the car smash to the local police and had a court date set up.I go to court. She is there with a lawyer. I am by myself.I am paying close attention but it is hard to hear what is what the judge is saying sometimes.Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh! I get it! The lawyer had the judge move the trial to another courtroom! Those assholes! I am ON IT! I run to the other courtroom.Lawyer makes his case. Then I request to the judge to make my case.I tell the judge that I was hit my an uninsured motorist and she did extensive damage to my car. Now, I have to use my insurance coverage but I have a high deductible of $500 and she needs to pay me that money. The judge agrees with me that i should be paid that $500 for my deductible.ONLY THEN does the lawyer give me a previously filled out check for $500.Asshats.The lawyer was doing the best he could to NOT PAY me that $500 but when I found out that they moved the trial to another courtroom I got them cornered. This was 25+ years ago. I probably could have gotten more from them but at least I got my $500.
What is the greatest blunder in amusement park history that took the longest to correct?
Action Park - Wikipedia in Vernon, New Jersey. It opened in 1978 and was voluntarily closed in 1996 when it was no longer financially viable. It was extensively renovated and was reopened in 1998 as Mountain Creek Waterpark. However, it should have been closed the day after it opened because it contained “attractions”, and I use that word loosely, that were horribly dangerous. It had several colourful nicknames while it operated“Traction Park”“Class Action Park”“Accident Park”Their legal troubles were the stuff of legend. From Wikipedia:A few rides were closed and dismantled due to costly settlements and rising insurance premiums in the 1990s, and the park's attendance began to suffer as a recession early in that decade reduced the number of visitors. In early 1995, GAR operated Vernon Valley/Great Gorge and Action Park with no liability insurance. New Jersey did not require it, and GAR found it more economical to go to court than purchase liability insurance, since they relied on their own self-insurance. However, they ultimately purchased liability insurance from Evanston Insurance Company in May of that year to cover Action Park and the skiing facilities. As 1995 progressed, GAR's financial woes continued to accumulate. First Fidelity Bank, who lent $19 million to GAR and some 15 other connected corporations, filed suit against them in an effort to begin the process of foreclosing on the debt owed to them. Law firms owed money for services rendered between 1991 and 1993 also began filing suit. As November approached, GAR negotiated a deal with Noramco Capital Corp. and the Praedium Fund of CS First Boston, in which they would purchase the debt owed to First Fidelity, temporarily fending off an impending foreclosure.A lot of the problem was the lax enforcement of amusement attractions by the State of New Jersey, which pretty much overlooked the safety problems most of the time. The company was fined only once in its 18 year history even though injuries were a daily occurence. On top of that were poorly designed rides, a staff that was largely in the age range of 16–19, a largely urban clientele with poor swimming skills, and lax enforcement of the sale of on-site liquor.Mind you, some of these problems still exist. Not long after, a ride at another waterpark collapsed when a few people went down a tube at the same time, dropping the crowd about 50 feet. Another water park ride decapitated a young man when the raft he was on flew off the track.
Which city is the most livable: Boston, Chicago, or Seattle? We'd prefer to live in a city where we can get a 2br apartment for between $1.5-2k/month. It would be especially helpful if you could draw comparisons between two or all three.
Let me address item by item. I have lived 12 years in Chicago and 5 years in Boston (so far), so I will focus on those two cities.*We are a childless couple in our early 30's.Chicago wins that one hands down. Boston has about 1/100th of the Chicago scene. That said, once you start thinking family and kids, Boston wins hands down, since you have the best doctors, the best hospitals, the best coverage for expecting mothers and kids (MA is strict with insurance companies), and MA is the only state in US where infertility treatments are covered (god forbid you need them, but it happens).*My girlfriend has a guaranteed job in whichever of these three metropolitan areas she chooses and I plan on leaving my current job in order to move out with her.I did that for my wife and haven't regretted it at all. I've built 10X the professional network here in the 1st year than one I've built over 12 years in Chicago. Chicago is just too clickish and too spread out. Especially if you are in tech, marketing, or sales, Boston job market is red hot!*A city with a strong job market (particularly in biotech/pharma/research/clinical fields) is preferred. My wife is a scientist and from what I was told, Seattle does not have a job market in the biotech/pharma/etc. Boston actually wins this one hands down. Especially inside the 128 corridor (Route 128 towards Boston), you can't drive quarter mile without seeing a brand name in those fields.*We'd like to live in a neighborhood that is low-key but is not too cut-off from the normal city stuff (bars/restaurants, stores, parks, arts, etc...).In Chicago I would pick Evanston with that requirement. North side of Chicago by the lake (north of Irving Park road) is also really nice and fits the bill. Issue I had with Chicago - you just have to have a car each or you are severely limited with what you can do on weekends etc.In Boston, considering what you want to pay, likely only Jamaica Plain is the only place you will find anything. $1.5K-$2K for 2br doesn't get you anything remotely nice in Boston area. Davis Square could fit the profile of what you are looking for too, especially since public trans is great in Somerville/Cambridge, but you need to budget $2K-$2.5K for 2bed. And that is without parking. That said, most people I know here don't have cars and are 100% on Zipcars. So you save money there. Also, jumping on a bus to NYC for a weekend is easy.*We both enjoy food and eating out, particularly in areas which are culturally diverse.Re. diversity. Chicago is ridiculously segregated city. Once I moved to Boston, that really hit me. In Boston only Southie is heavily dominated by townies, who don't like outsiders. Rest of the areas are very diverse.Food scene. Boston - compared to Chicago, there is none. You will not find decent Thai, Chinese, Mexican, etc. in Boston - it is all bland garbage. Italian is about the only well-represented cuisine here, if you know where to look. I know Boston chefs are trying hard, but even mediocre Chicago restaurant will beat them. Every time I go back to Chicago for a weekend, I add 2lb., because you just can't stop enjoying all those amazing restaurant after spending your days in the culinary backwaters.Where Boston beats Chicago though is in micro-brews. Ordering Bud Light here should be considered a crime with all the micro and pico breweries here. What I do need to add is:Weather - Chicago simply sucks! Winters in Chicago are brutal and so are summers. Boston is bit more tempered.Drivers - Chicago should be called capital of road-rage and aggressive drivers, Boston should be called capital of most oblivious drivers there are. In Boston you have people going into your lane without any turn signals right in front of your nose. Honk all you want - no reaction. I don't know how people in Boston get drivers licenses.Public transportation - quality of is bad in both Chicago and Boston, but at least in Chicago you have 24-hour option. Boston shuts down at 12:20 and re-opens at 5-something. Big problem when you have a 6AM flight and have to shell out $50 to get to the airport.Travel - Chicago, though centrally located, requires longer flights to get anywhere. Boston - I can hop on the flight to Chicago, NY, London, etc. - no sweat, 6-7 hour flight tops.
