The day after the election, the federal government agencies are ready to meet the people they’re likely going to be working for in the coming year to brief them on what the department does and what their job responsibilities are.In 2016, that didn’t happen. The departments prepared, and no-one showed up.At the Department of Energy, the future secretary, Rick Perry, finally showed up a month later. When he ran for president in 2012, he vowed to dissolve the Department of Energy. He figured Energy had programs with respect to fossil fuels and it wasn’t really needed.The day after the meeting, Perry was shaken. The DoE doesn’t have anything to do with fossil fuels at all. Their primary role is regulating nuclear power. That includes tracking nuclear material worldwide to make sure it doesn’t fall into the hands of terrorists. When the Syrian Civil War started, the DoE and the Russian armed forces worked together to secure nuclear materials in the country.And things haven’t improved much since. Generally, a cabinet secretary will grow into the job as time goes by, but that hasn’t happened here. Part of the issue is that most of the appointees aren’t really interested in anything other than allowing their departments to deteriorate and become irrelevant.For example, the United States is now seeing what happens when you dismantle an epidemic response team, which was done in 2018. That was part of the Department of Health and Human Services. That was done under the watch of the current secretary, Alex Azar, who has no hospital experience (he’s a pharmaceutical lobbyist).
