Your project about so and so sounds really great. Would love to help you with it if you still need someone. Please let me know if you want to chat more!”Or not even….Now granted this is a little easier for me since I have a robust record, but it’s what I’ve been doing all along.I find these long winded proposals that come off generic and you promise the world get eye rolls. It definitely does from me when I post jobs.I can’t stand it when someone writes a ridiculously long proposal thinking they know me and my business.News flash - You don’t bro. Past and present users have ranged from high school science classes to university researchers, to commercial businesses.In this case, the payload slot has been obtained by a small company called Zero G Kitchen in partnership with the DoubleTree Hotel chain. Their intent is to learn how to prepare food, in space. NASA and the Russian space agency have focused on simply warming and rehydrating foods that were fully cooked and packaged on Earth. Zero G Kitchen wants to learn how to actually cook foods in space. They believe this knowledge will be of benefit for future commercial use of space (tourism) and future space agency missions that establish a presence of humans beyond low Earth orbit.Zero G Kitchen’s payload consists of a very small oven that will cook one cookie at a time. The experiment consists of five cookies, that will be returned to Earth for study. I’m pretty curious to see how the environment of microgravity will impact the cooking process.

No. A private company (Zero G Kitchen) purchased a payload slot from another private company (NanoRack) that is responsible for operating two of the payload racks onboard the ISS. A third private company (Northrop Grumman) then transported that payload to the ISS. I mention those three private companies to illustrate a primary objective of the ISS - to foster and encourage commercial utilization of space.The majority of experiments onboard the ISS are not NASA experiments. The ISS is an international laboratory that has payload space that is available to anyone - academia or industry. Anyone can submit a proposal. If that proposal has funding, presents a legitimate experiment plan, meets safety requirements, meets technical requirements, and doesn’t require excessive crew time, it can fly.We don’t have a good understanding of how cooking works in space. As commercial space tourism and government space exploration take people to space for longer periods of time and takes them farther from Earth, that is an area of knowledge that will need to be remedied. The goal of Zero G Kitchen is to identify and solve the challenges related to food preparation in space so that when missions need that knowledge, it will be available.
