Application For Graduate Students - Uc San Diego: Fill & Download for Free

I had just returned from lunch with my colleagues and it was 1:30 pm IST, February 25, 2016. I had just received a new email from gd-shore and the subject line read “UC San Diego Graduate Application Decision”. Riding high on an admit from the previous day, I opened the mail.Dear Kiran Kannar,Congratulations! I am pleased to inform you that you have been admitted as a graduate student for Fall 2016 to the M.S. program in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego……I think I let out a tiny but audible “Yes” with a punch because my colleague in the adjacent cubicle immediately looked at me. The moment was special because I had been waiting for the mail since January as UCSD sends admits for the MS program on a rolling basis. Based on GradCafe inputs however, I was confident that they had not yet sent any emails that year till February. Opening that mail was a little anticlimactic because an email in February mostly meant an admit.However, it felt extra special because I was able to reverse UCSD’s decision from the previous year; it seemed to validate my improved profile since my last application plus the vastly different statement of purpose. It showed I was ready and that UCSD seemed to acknowledge it. I don’t remember much of the afternoon, but I think I called up my family, lazily fixed some bugs at work, and went home with a confirmed life-changing moment.

I’m writing as someone who got his undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley and his graduate degree in UC San Diego (and whose father taught at UCLA, where I spent a lot of time as a kid). I was accepted to the graduate program at UC Berkeley but as another person quite accurately answered, many departments at UC San Diego are superior to the same departments at UC Berkeley or UCLA and in my case, when I was making the choice, UC San Diego was significantly superior to UC Berkeley or UCLA. I’ve visited all these campuses recently and I can tell you that it’s hard to see a difference in the quality of the students and the intensity that they approach their studies. And if you are interested in the high tech bio-medical sciences, oceanography, music composition and many other departments, UC San Diego is the leader in these fields.As you should know, the UC system tends to give priority at some campuses for certain disciplines. So, for agriculture and related sciences, UC Davis is the place. For math, I believe it is Berkeley. For mainstream theater and film or music performance, or dance, UCLA is the place. It all depends upon what you intend to focus on, if you already know.I don’t think I can add to the other answers as to why you didn’t get in at UCLA or Berkeley, except to note that these two universities get vastly more very qualified applicants than they have space for. Getting into UCSD is in itself quite an accomplishment and is one that you can be justifiably proud. So unless the area you know you want to study is clearly weak at UCSD, I really think you should feel very good about this option.
