PDF Editor FAQ

Can a NPTEL certificate help me in KVPY SX interview (if I mention it in self appraisal form because I don't have anything else to write in "scientific activities")?

Look, certificates does not matter much in KVPY interview. Their primary goal is to know how much you are interested in Science and what have you done so far in your life outside your standard curriculum. To know if you have written the truth or not they can just ask you questions about the topic in which you got the NPTEL certificate, none will ask for your certificate. Now, the query you are concerned about is actually pretty normal that you were so busy in your coaching and school that you did not attend any Science camp and now you have nothing much to write on the KVPY self appraisal form. Last year I was also in the same situation and I wrote all the MIT_OCW courses and MITx courses on edx that I completed by then and I cleared the interview pretty well. I hope that gives you the answer.

How was your KVPY 2017 interview experience? Which stream are you: SA/SX/SB? What questions were you asked?

My interview was held at IISER Mohali. I was appearing as an SX student. Background:I had one month to prepare for the aptitude test(actually I studied only the last two weeks sincerely) so I decided to do some smart work.I analysed all the previous year question papers for the most frequently asked topics. So I worked really hard on them and gave the paper such that I just crossed the cut off.(Which I'm not very proud of and I regret not passing with flying colours when I had the chance)Plot twist: There is an interview which adds to the 25% of the final cutoff. Now I had to perform well in the interview to actually get selected.I started preparation by again refining topics such as Genetics and Biotechnology.I also watched some extremely basic videos on particle physics. Mostly introductory videos by Dr. Don Lincoln so that I have an idea about the question they are asking.Interview: There are 5–6 members. I don't remember most of the conversation but here goes.Me: Good morning sir, madam.1 (panel manager): Good morning.I hand over my self appraisal form and teacher recommendation letter to him and sit down.1: Where do you study? (He asks looking at my uniform)Me: I'm in xyz school. He is reads my interests as “the material inside the nucleus” and asks for the next fav topic.Me: I like particle physics.1: So Misha likes small things.I smile and the biology teacher starts my interview.2: Tell me about the role of nucleus.Me: explains its role as a brain of the cell.2: What about its other roles?Me: Tells about replication and transcription.2: Why is DNA used as genetic material?Me: Explains its stability.2: What If we want to replicate DNA in yeast cell?Me: Explains splicing of RNA.2: What if we want to store the sequence?Me: Doesn't get what she is trying to ask at first but the I figure out she wants I store the RNA sequence derived so I apply teminism and store it as DNA.2: Asks to explain sex linked genes.Me: Explains sex linked recessive genes, hemizygous condition on the black board.2: What if the gene is sex linked and present in 50% of the population?I'm thinking when the physics teacher takes hold.3: So Misha, if I have a microscope at home and my friend X comes and tells me he wants to star gaze, what should I do?I panic, optics was the last thing I expected when I said particle physics.I quickly draw the ray diagrams of telescope and microscope and try to tell her we will interchange the positions of the objective and the eye piece. She is not satisfied by the look she gives me, she repeats the question but I just don't know what else to say.Its dead silence in the room, 1 is reading my forms and hasn't looked up since when professor 4 comes to my rescue.4: So what do you like in particle physics?Me: Standard model of particle physics4: Explain.Me: Starts to explain on the board. 4 interrupts.4: what is a pion?Me: sir it is a kind of meson-4: What is it made of?Me: Quark and an Anti quark.4 nods and says OK while 1 looks up for the first time and says its was nice meetin- 2 interrupts.2 : Would you like to answer the last question I asked?Me: repeats question to myself, not getting the answer. Thats when I look at the hemizygous condition I had written on the board before.Me: That's maybe because the gene is dominant. Sex linked dominant.2: Okay1: It was nice meeting you Misha.I smile and walk out.I'm analysing my interview when this guy Y hands me a slip to buy a free samosa and cup of tea. My smile widens thinking admission mille na mille, samosa toh mil hi gya.So the result came today and guess what? Mujhe samose ke sath sath admission bhi mil gyi. Thanks for reading (:(Source of images- Internet)

Psychologically speaking, is Trump suffering from anything?

Let me make this very clear: we simply cannot say with certainty. Trump hasn’t been given a proper, impartial, objective assessment by a qualified psychiatrist. We, regardless of our backgrounds, cannot therefore conclude for sure if he’s suffering from any particular mental illness. It would, indeed, be unprofessional for even a psychiatrist to offer a conclusive diagnosis without assessing the patient. That observed, Trump does demonstrate quite a few particular issues which do lead me to think that he’s mentally ill.Firstly, Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The DSM-V criteria for it pretty much highlights Trump as a classic (if not textbook) case:Significant impairments in personality functioning manifest by:Impairments in self functioning (a or b):a. Identity: Excessive reference to others for self-definition and self-esteem regulation; exaggerated self-appraisal may be inflated or deflated, or vacillate between extremes; emotional regulation mirrors fluctuations in self-esteem.b. Self-direction: Goal-setting is based on gaining approval from others; personal standards are unreasonably high in order to see oneself as exceptional, or too low based on a sense of entitlement; often unaware of own motivations.ANDImpairments in interpersonal functioning (a or b):a. Empathy: Impaired ability to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others; excessively attuned to reactions of others, but only if perceived as relevant to self; over- or underestimate of own effect on others.b. Intimacy: Relationships largely superficial and exist to serve self-esteem regulation; mutuality constrained by little genuine interest in others‟ experiences and predominance of a need for personal gain.I’ve highlighted the key areas, but we’ve all seen this from Trump: his constant touting of ratings; his need to receive constant attention and praise (and his attacks on those in the media who do not give it); his tendency of changing policies based solely on how it plays among the Republican Base; his peculiar habit of claiming to be the best at everything (and often claiming that others have said so!), and a significant tendency to exaggerate accomplishments - indeed, suggesting extreme accomplishment even when the reality is that he’s made some serious mistakes.A lack of empathy is definitely in there - Trump has shown absolutely no empathy whatsoever throughout his Presidency. We see anger when challenged, we see buoyancy when successful (or when touting imaginary success), and we see joy when praised - and indeed, note that he often feels more positively towards those who have praised him even when that praise is insincere. His relationships are most certainly superficial: he sees other people solely in how they reflect upon himself. His wives (particularly Melania) can easily be classified as ‘trophy wives’, and he has a particular (and rather peculiar) obsession with Ivanka, notably with respects to her looks, noteworthy in his own words:“If Ivanka weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her.”And:“My daughter, Ivanka. She’s 6 feet tall, she’s got the best body. She made a lot money as a model—a tremendous amount.”These are not about Ivanka: they’re about Trump. “Look at what I did!”. That’s textbook narcissism.Beyond that, I would also argue that Trump is slowly losing his marbles - there are clear signs of diminished verbal coherence, and his tendency of ‘word salads’ are particularly interesting. Note the difference in his speech patterns and coherence here.“The final key to the way I promote is bravado. I play to people's fantasies. People may not always think big themselves, but they can still get very excited by those who do. That's why a little hyperbole never hurts. People want to believe that something is the biggest and the greatest and the most spectacular. I call it truthful hyperbole. It's an innocent form of exaggeration—and a very effective form of promotion. (Page 53, “Art of the Deal”, quote attributed to Trump)Now contrast that with what Trump said about Elon Musk in January 2020:“Well, you have to give him credit. I spoke to him very recently, and he's also doing the rockets, he likes rockets, and he does good at rockets too, by the way. I never saw… where the engines come down with no wings, no anything, and they're landing. I've said I've never seen that before. And I was worried about him, because he's one of our great geniuses, and we have to protect our genius.”The difference in coherence is pretty clear - Trump’s first quote is clear, contextual, relevant, and expressed in a reasonably articulate manner. The second is disjointed, with parts of the quote only loosely related to the context, and fairly obviously a ‘word salad’, insofar as they’re unfiltered expressed thoughts. It’s pretty clear to me that Trump has some serious psychological problems, but again, I can’t give you a formal diagnosis, only my suspicions.Edit: Just to be clear, I’m aware that Art of the Deal was ghost-written, but the style of the quote and the coherence Trump has displayed in a lot of his older interviews is consistent. That coherence has very clearly diminished since that time, which is why I included it.
