We Indians have a problem in speaking English but we can understand it completely ( most of us ). This is because we get stuck while communicating in English. That particular word we need to speak in next sentence doesn't come instantly. So for that moment we assume that I just can't speak english, it's very difficult. But my friends it is not difficult at allTo overcome the problem we face in 2 nd point, we need focus on 3 rd point which is the most important one.3) PRACTICEPractice is the ultimate key to achieve anything you want.If you will not follow above 2 rules consistently then it will be difficult for you. These are some of the career options that you have with a degree in English - these are some of the things I have done in my life:Teach/Academics: I know you said career options apart from teaching. But I just thought I should put it out here. I worked as a lecturer at St. Ann's for an year. I taught English Language and Literature. I quite liked it as long as I was there, and if I had continued I probably would have pursued academics at the University level.Journalism: If you have a passion for reporting, writing and editing, this is the field you should pick. What are the skills you need as a journalist? I worked as a journalist for seven years at various national and local newspapers and, I believe, I can answer this question with some authority. Here are the skills you will require:You should be able to write. Not school/college level essays, but reports, new stories, feature articles, and analytical articles. You will need to learn how to put your reader's needs first and structure stories for publication. You'll have to write to a deadline, and to a specified length. You should be able to edit stories for style and length.You should be able to re-write. And rewrite in such a way that the piece adheres to the style guidelines of the publication you are working with.You'll need to know how to research stories. Journalism is about reporting on what's happening now or will happen in future. By the time a story gets into print, it's old news. Very early during my internship I realised I had absolutely no imagination, and hence creativity, and left this field.Corporate Communications: This would be a good field to explore after you have had some years of experience as a journalist, for the network you build is very important. A corporate communicator is usually responsible for all internal and external communication within an organisation.Please note that I finished my masters in the early nineties. I do believe that today there are a lot more opportunities available for young graduates, some of them really radical. You should just keep your eyes and ears open, and I am sure you will find something that will interest and enthuse you.
