From the perspective of sane honest people who believe every eligible voter should be able to easily exercise their right, automatic voting is a reliable, quick way to certify that every voter who participates in an election is eligible.From the perspective of anti democratic, delusional people who believe keeping “those people” from voting because they believe in rampant voter fraud (for which there is less evidence of than the existence of Santa Claus), automatic voting is rigging elections against them.I live in California. We can register to vote when we obtain ID or driver’s licenses. The vetting for those documents involves submitting proof of identity such as your original birth certificate or US passport, marriage licenses or other documentation proving any name changes, proof of residency and mailing address such as a utility bill, mortgage, insurance docs or rental agreement, and your social security card. And you have to physically show up at the DMV with the documents to complete the process—you can’t just upload the documents online. To register to vote this way, you simply check the box on your application for ID. Obviously, if you aren’t a citizen or old enough to vote you’ll be smoked out by this process.Sounds like an ironclad process for proving you are an eligible voter to me. Not sure how illegal immigrants or dead people can sneak onto the rolls with all those requirements to me.Once you do all that, you then can either show up at your voting area, or have the state mail your ballot—you already have been vetted so one person can’t get multiple ballots any more than they can get multiple ID or driver’s licenses. This last election, California simply mailed everyone a ballot due to COVID. You fill it out, and your ballot is given a tracking number, like FedEx does when you send a package.So yeah, people complaining about automatic voter registration obviously haven’t experienced having to actually do it because if they did they’d know how rigorous the vetting process is.
