For most cops, there isn't really a decision on whether to work on holidays or not. It's more of a functrion of your assigned days off. If the holiday falls on your day off, you don't work that day. Otherwise, you do. Some officers with Monday-Friday day time schedules (administrators, training, some detectives, etc.) will have holidays off, but everyone else sticks to the regular schedule. An officer can always request to use a vacation day, saved compensatory time, or a floating holiday to miss work on a holiday or for any other personal business, but most stick to the schedule. Working holidays is something that goes with the territory if you choose to work in law enforcement, so if it's important to you to have those days off, you should probably look for other employment.Most police labor contracts provide for premium pay (double time or double time-and-a-half) when officers work a holiday, so there is considerable financial benefit to working those days. If you're in an assignment where your office is closed on the holiday, you get the extra time off, but no extra money.Most law enforcement agencies will make reasonable accomodations for officers who feel the need to have certain days, specially religious holidays, off. My agency had a few Jewish officers who asked to use comp or vacation time on the high holy days like Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, and so far as I know, the request was always honored. Had their been an emergency, all leave would have been cancelled and everyone who could be reached would have been recalled, but that is also one of those "goes with the territory" situations.

Actually yes! We have found some very happy new customers right here in Australia. My wife (for example) this week bought 2 huge fresh rock lobsters for Christmas, which is something we haven’t been able to afford to eat for many years. They have been far too expensive ever since the high-priced Chinese market opened up a few years ago. We are really looking forward to eating these lobsters along with other fresh Australian produce, all washed down with premium Australian wines. Top quality wine, by the way, has also been beyond our family budget in the recent past, because of the high prices that Chinese people have been willing to pay for premium bottled wine. My answer was intended as an openly facetious response to the serious problem of an ongoing trade war between Australia and China. It was flippant, and perhaps ill considered. It’s interesting that the vast majority of the up-voters of my answer seem to have Chinese names. Could it be that these people are part of the paid contingent of cyber trolls who regularly comment here on Quora, to saturate this site with a Chinese point of view?In reality, I’m appalled by the Chinese use of trade sanctions to apply political leverage to a much smaller country like Australia. These measures are pure political bullying, and I think China will suffer for it in the longer term. The impact of this bullying falls on many small Australian businesses and families employed in those businesses. Those impacted include farmers, fishermen, meat workers, wine makers and others who have worked hard over many years to build a good trading relationship with people in China. It is appalling that this good will can be lost due to a whim of some Chinese officials, simply because they do not like the comments of Australian politicians and the policies of our elected government. Many of us, (myself included), did not vote for this government. We did not condone our Prime Minister’s inappropriate tone in his request for an independent inquiry into the emergence of Covid19. The trade sanctions appear to be part of an effort to convince Australian voters to elect a different government in the future. In other words, a blatant attempt to interfere with the democracy.The previous posts I have written here on Quora (and elsewhere) have been distinctly pro-China and anti-Scott Morrison. These trade sanctions have since changed my attitude to China. I no longer regard myself as a ‘friend of China’ and I’m sure there are many other thinking Australians who have changed likewise.I find it particularly illustrative that while China continues the campaign against Australia, other Chinese officials are extending the olive branch to the US. It appears to be OK to offer to re-build a sound trading relationship with the US, while at the same time punishing Australia for our alliance with that country.Why the double standard? Like most bullies, China will not attack someone their own size an strength. They will only attack smaller and weaker countries, whenever those countries express any disagreement or disapproval.This bullying might not go unnoticed by smaller countries getting involved in China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative. Reputations are hard to re-build.
