Both Arizona State University ASU and University of Arizona UA are public universities with roughly the same tuition cost—the economic choice are the same— so a different criteria other than least cost must be used. The criteria can be relative rankings, location, faculty-student ratio, and so on.What distinguishes universities are the faculty, the students, and the alumni. It is access to the faculty research and their fellow students is what students are really paying for. The alumni comes into play in funding and job placement. The key word is “research” which is why I look at the graduate school rankings which is by department mainly because undergraduates at top research universities are exposed to research starting in their upper division courses.I will use Electrical Engineering as an example. ASU is ranked 27th and UA is ranked 48th in Electrical Engineering, which means that there are only 26 universities have a stronger research programs than ASU in Electrical Engineering as compared to 47 than UA. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a UA ranking webpage similar to ASU’s, so you will need to dig a little deeper to find it.Bottom line: Using research as a deciding factor, ASU has the stronger research program than UA making ASU the better academic choice.
