QS rankings uses following metrics to rank institutions :Academic Reputation (40%)Employer reputation (10%)Citations per faculty (20%)Faculty Student ratio (20%)International faculty ratio (5%)International students ratio ( 5%)Now what happens is our IITs/IISc score heavily in first 3 parameters.In fact I feel proud saying that in “citations per faculty metrics”, IISc ranks 6th in world. I feel rather more happy to enlighten readers that IISc scores 100/100 in this segment. IITD ranks 39th in world if we consider only citations per faculty. So what it implies is that our IITs are no less in research. Other IITs also score good in these first 3 parameters.We lack in last three metrics in which many of our institutions score a perfect 0. They constitute a 30% of total marks. This is the major reason why we lag behind. Not scoring good in last three metrics is not the fault of IITs. It is because of geography, economy, trend and opportunity in the region.Just take a look at the above picture from QS rankings site. We score a 0 in last three columns. If we can even score bare minimum in last three columns of faculty to student ratio, international faculty and students I guess we can rank in top 50. So if you see IITs stand in ranks just on basis of academic reputation, employer reputation and citation………. and that is HUGE.Edit 1:QS Rankings 2019 were released on wednesday.IITB ranked 162 in world.IITB scored almost nothing on international faculty and students. All Indian premiere institutes go back in rankings due to that factor. On other hand, very ordinary US institutes score heavily in these parameters and score better in rankings. Thanks to people moving to US for MS.
