What travel hacks have saved you a lot of money?I love cruising but I refuse to pay full price. There is little need to pay brochure rate unless you want to book a popular cruise for a specific date.I usually book cruises through VacationsToGo.com which sells discounted cruises. If you can go on short notice, its “90-Day Ticker” is the place to look for significantly reduced rates. The closer one gets to the sailing date, the cheaper the fare.The repositioning cruises are the best deal because the ships are rarely full. I have taken two transatlantic repositioning cruises from Florida to Europe—once to Lisbon, the other to Rome. Each was 15 days for under $900 per person.Now any time you can get a cruise fare for under $100/day it’s a great price, but $60/day??? Because I have sailed on Princess Line numerous times, when we arrived at the terminal I was told that we had been upgraded to an outside mini-suite with balcony! Holy cow!The second cruise was on Royal Caribbean, but I was a new customer to them so I got an inside cabin and no upgrade. It was still a terrific deal.In case you don’t think this is still possible, I’m looking right now and have found a couple of Holland America 15 day repositioning cruises for $799/per person inside cabin.All three of these lines are marvelous. These cruises are fully inclusive with cabin, meals, room service, and entertainment. (Drinks, specialty restaurants, spa treatments, shore excursions, and souvenirs are extra, of course.) Where else can one be utterly pampered with first class service and outstanding food for this bargain price?

If flying economy class, download the airport map and search for showers available to economy passengers. They often exist, but are hard to find. Perth, Western Australia airport (home) has them at the car rental end of terminal 3 near virgin.On many airlines including Qantas, see which flights have cheapest seats left, then see if they have business class frequent flyer seats available online, then buy discount economy and use points to upgrade to business class. [Heresy Alert] I am naturally disorganised and have repeatedly needed the improved 20 minutes check-in deadline [30 minutes if checked luggage] for Australian domestic travel.Wear shoes and clothing with no metal bits.If a restaurant is established and needs to advertise in tourist brochures, there is probably a reason why it cannot rely on repeat local customers. This also applies if a restaurant has a loud spruiker.When a local bureaucrat suggests something that appears really stupid, it is probably the best way of avoiding potential difficulties caused by local regulation. Thank them. All countries have some rules that appear really stupid to foreigners with no evident basis in common sense.[Vile Heresy Alert] I sometimes travel with a massive Samsonite suitcase as well as carry on luggage, contrary to normal travel advice. Having a big suitcase is sometimes really useful:When travelling to places I have friends/ family, I can bring Australian delicacies. 10kg of Twisties and Timtams is far cheaper than London accommodation.Similarly I can bring a big box of fresh fruit that is in season at home to give to local staff - a box of mangos can work wonders despite me being the accountant from head office.When staying at cheap hotels without kitchen facilities, I can bring food AND a small microwave.I can easily bring home more stuff than I took with me.packing is very easy if I have no need to use space efficiently. See above for my natural organisation level.It has wheels so weight is only a problem on stairs.It is very obvious if my bag starts leaving without me.I can usually fit my carry on luggage inside it.It is tough enough to handle cobblestones or being dragged down stairs, and has never been damaged outside Ouagadougou or Paris.[I wonder if this bit will get me pilloried.] It is tough enough to accidentally hold open doors on public transport.
