What industries will fight the introduction of driverless/self-driving cars?

I'll focus on identifying possible industries likely to push back and the tactics they will deploy. There is not enough data or context at this point, for me at least, to confidently predict their effectiveness.Privacy AdvocatesThe Google IS evil crowd will argue that Google plans to collect data about how you choose to exercise your freedom of movement. Google will know when you go the grocery store. When you decide to go to pick-up take-out. When you go to the gym. When you don't go to the gym. They can use this data to better target you for their ad products. This would put foursquare to shame.Tactics: Mostly digital. Social media campaigns. Op-eds. Blog posts. Localized protests. Short videos.Insurance Companies (h/t Dave Mills, Scott Stadum)Auto insurance is a highly profitable industry. Autonomous driving may legitimately reduce the risk of accidents and cut into these profits. In the short-term, these new cars will not disrupt the industry but over time autonomous driving will shrink the market for actuarial work as well as underwriting.Tactics: Refusal to insure autonomous vehicles. Price cuts to sway consumers away from autonomous cars.Lobbying local, state and federal governments. Getting more involved with political races and possibly creating fundraising PACs.For more, I recommend reading Robert Peterson's law review article on how California insurance laws apply to this topic http://digitalcommons.law.scu.edu/facpubs/337/Repair ShopsComputers will do less damage to a car than a human driver. Accidents, speeding, monitoring engine health, etc. Repair shops will have less clients. There will be new business to take care of autonomous vehicles, but it will be less frequent and more universal, cutting into speciality costs.Tactics: Smaller scale versions of what insurance companies will do. Protests, mainly union organized and led.Police / State TroopersAutonomous cars will observe speed limits and may even help Americans evolve beyond speed limits as traffic patterns will determine a safe speed. Speeding tickets are an important source of revenue.Tactics: Call drives. Political lobbying/voting. Possible intimidation (not likely to last, mostly ad hoc and will be covered negatively by the press.Taxis/Limos/ShuttlesIn the summer of 2012, the Washington, D.C. City Council tried to get Uber kicked out of town because they pose a threat to taxi drivers. Imagine how they will react to autonomous cars, especially those that are managed on a rental model? I would not expect any warm embraces.Tactics: Local lobbying, protests, hearings, local press. For more, see http://www.driverlesscarhq.com/uber-vs-taxis-in-washington-dc/

What are the latest research topics in Environmental Engineering?

I defer to the current students and experts in the industry. I know “geographic information systems” was the cats meow recently. I would guess that water quality will get more attention. Wetlands will stay important. My expertise is more in the “retail side” of Environmental Health & Safety. So, I say things like “don’t dump the used motor oil into the stream; give it to me and I will make it go away.” “Don’t burn the used motor oil in a drum with the top cut off; the smoke will have toxics in it beyond the nastyness of new motor oil.” “Wash your hands after using chemicals.”Basically, I am mommy to dozens (up to thousands) of workers telling them to not run with scissors. I am still amazed that people like me are needed… But here I am on docks/ armored vehicle repair shops/ airfields/ missile bases watching and correcting adults every day until the do the right thing…

What is your perspective/take on what it’s like for a foreigner/expat living in Sweden?

It depends a bit on what kind of foreigner or expat one is.I’m a German who lives here in Sweden, and for me, it’s perfect. I look and act more Swedish than most Swedes, I love the climate with its intense seasons, and I was raised in an environment and a society where forests and wilderness were romanticised, design and style glorified, and sustainability, social justice, and gender equality a normal expectation. For me, Sweden is home entirely, on all levels. If anything, they are better than the Germans at all of these, so it comes in doubly satisfying.I feel it is the same for my friends and colleagues from France, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. In fact, none of my contacts from western countries who live here ever seem to have any real issues with Sweden’s ways. Some think it’s too slow, and some think it’s too dark in winter for too long. I agree it’s slow and dark, but not too slow or too dark. I’ve surely lived in places that really outdid Sweden on those aspects. And it’s nothing compared to all the good things life here comes with.I’m also an academic, working for the government, at a university. I am surrounded by well-off people who are softly spoken and highly educated, doing a job that takes place entirely in the comfort of centrally heated rooms with up to date, ergonomic furniture and equipment. It’s how my job has always been, also in China, England, and New Zealand. But for many professional groups, work in Sweden will seem much cushier than the standards they are used to. Health and safety standards here are through the roof; the staff kitchen (and hey! you’ll have one!) of any small car repair shop is nicer than some middle class residential kitchens I’ve seen elsewhere. Construction vehicles have heated cabins, and auto mechanics work in closed garages that are a comfortable 20+ degrees Celsius. So, no worries about rude awakenings, you won’t have any.The only problem may well be your own nature. It takes some downshifting to fit in here, and I’ve met people from more rough and gruff cultures who were committing every imaginable faux-pas, “like an elephant in a china shop”, as we say in German, and they were having one hell of a bad time. This place requires an unusually high level of professional spirit and consensus, and there is no space for mood swings or one-person impulse action on the job. Think “space station” - if you could be an astronaut, you could live in Sweden.Anyone who cannot get their heads around the concepts of Jantelagen, gender equality, team work, and process engagement is in for a crash derby here. This is clearly one of the most refined, domesticated, and highly developed societies in the world. Ferals will need to be potty-trained.
