A friend of mine was five years into his PhD and had made it that far because of his thesis advisor, a man who knew people in the right places. So influential was his thesis advisor that he even managed to get the coveted Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) in his second year, without even publishing a single paper.Not. One. Paper!Every year, when the review committee would turn up to evaluate his performance, his supervisor would weave his magic and get him cleared.It didn’t matter that the head of his own department laughed and ridiculed his work and its progress in front of the review committee, he got his SRF extended anyway.Four years through and still no paper.During his fourth year he presented his work at an inter-disciplinary conference, jointly organised by different departments of our university. Among the audience was the head of the chemistry department, a professor who had done his PhD in drug delivery systems at Caltech.My friend was asked a few simple questions such as “where in the body does the drug dissociate?” or “were the SEM images collected in the solid form or as a colloid?” or “how does the drug get flushed out from the body?” or “what are you going to make the formulation out of?” And he could not answer any of them.“Give up, man!” said the visibly amused professor. “You’re in your final year and you can’t answer the basics of your own work. Yeah, if you don’t know the story, look it up (“Fox, Rabbit, Lion and PhD”)You can pay a lot of money to shitty journals and publish your work overnightThere are a lot of people who don’t deserve certain scholarships and yet they get it, leaving many deserving students with no fundingA lot of work is published that doesn’t add anything significant to existing knowledgeAbout 99% of existing research is just an extension of existing knowledge (this isn’t necessarily a bad thing) and barely 1% contributes to anything groundbreaking or new (I’m looking for citations on this!)Really good publications for a particular individual or group comes in batches of 2 or 3 papers, as a result of data accumulated over 1 - 2 years of intense researchSometimes, this individual/group takes the same time to publish 1 really productive, high impact paper, that eventually has the potential to end up with hundreds of citationsStrong collaborations result in stronger papersAny one of the authors knowing the editor of a journal may/may not help the paper getting throughMy friend might have finished his PhD with the help of his thesis advisor, but he’s still rotting at home, desperately searching for a job.
