Look, any threat to resign if your demands are not met is a de facto offer to resign.A threat to quit is a different matter entirely, but if you use the word “resign” instead of “quit”, then it’s an offer.Language matters, as Timnit Gebru should very well know, given her research publications on language.She obviously has an identity politics drum to beat, when it comes to trying to jam political correctness down the throat of any nascent AI system, rather than letting the system decide for itself.You can’t believe that this is not the case, given a reading of her other publications.I have read all of her other publications — if you haven’t, you are not entitled to a professional opinion on whether or not there is an overt agenda expressed in those publications.Language does not work how she seems to think it works in her papers; rather instead of channeling thinking, it constrains thinking.I would say that her over positions in her papers are such that she wants to appear to be preventing channelization; but instead, her true agenda is to very much constrain (and thereby channelize!) the types of conclusions which an AI or machine learning model can produce as a result.To me, this is at least disingenuous.I think her departure from Google hurts Googles reputation — as it was intended to, and as the threat and demands associated with it, made it constitute a threat at all in the first place.But I really don’t think that it impacts Google’s AI work, as a company, going forward.I think the bigger operational problem that Google has is that internal communications get leaked to the press any time someone disagrees with the group sentiment, and thinks they can leak and get away with it.And so far, the people who leak information to the press have successfully “gotten away with it” — in that people have been fired, based on the contents of their internal communications that were leaked.But the people who did the leaking are not being fired, even though it’s a clear violation of their employment confidentiality agreements.I think that’s far more damaging to the Google corporate culture, going forward, than Google getting demands and a resignation threat contingent on those demands not being met.And Google subsequently deciding that it categorically would not meet those demands, and reluctantly accepting the offer of resignation inherent in the threat.If you offer to resign, contingent on demands, you have to be prepared for that resignation being accepted being one of the possible outcomes of the situation you have orchestrated.
