Oh goodness yes. I lived in Florida for decades, first in Cape Coral, then in Sarasota, then in Tampa.When I owned a computer consulting and graphic design company in Tampa, I rented an office in downtown Tampa on Kennedy Blvd, about six blocks from the Church of Christ the Avenger, a Christian Identity, white supremacist church (one big giveaway: their logo was a cross with a Nazi SS symbol in the center). They came into my office one day asking me to design handouts for them. I said no. They were remarkably polite for a bunch of Nazi scumbags.I have been to a gun show exactly once in my life, also in Tampa. This was…oh, 1998, 1999, somewhere thereabouts. Went with a friend of mine who is also a liberal gun owner.Never. Fucking. Again.I didn’t know what to expect, but I did not expect a parking lot full of pickups with Confederate flags on the back. The two things that stand out to me from that gun show were the booth with the mannequin in full Nazi SS officer dress uniform, selling not guns but Nazi flags and belt buckles and (of all the bizarre things) china plates with little swastikas printed on the back, and this dude buying ammunition at another booth going on and on and on and on with great enthusiasm in a loud voice about how he couldn’t wait for those n-----s to invade his house and he would blow those n-----s away and if those n-----s came looking for trouble he’d give it to them.Fucking Florida, man.Which is not to say it only happens in Florida. I’ve told this story on Quora before, but after I moved to Oregon, my girlfriend Zaiah went out to Shari’s late one night. We were eating our eggs and bacon when this random guy walks up to us out of nowhere and starts talking to us about how it’s so nice to see a white couple together, not like those mixed-race race traitors you see everywhere these days.

It isn’t horrible. Just like any place it has its positives and negatives, but for the most part, it isn’t the worst place I’ve lived in.Here, they have school choice, which has actually been helpful with a few situations two of my children have had with some teachers. But those were quickly taken care of. The school choice office and school board worked quickly and took care of the problems. I found them to be more supportive than I thought they would be.There are nice parks in many of the neighborhoods, and plenty of stores available without having to drive too far. There are many different sports available for kids, a great martial arts dojo that many of the local police officers train in, a waterpark, a couple of bowling alleys, mini-golf, go-carts, and there’s an airport in Fort Myers—about a 30–45 minute drive.There are places to rent canoes and kayaks. And there are some small islands you can take a boat to and spend the day on their beaches. One of the islands has a nice restaurant. It’s about a 1-hour drive to Ft. Myers Beach.The houses aren’t too close to each other, like I’ve seen in many older cities. There are still more rural areas, but there’s a lot of building going on and the population is growing pretty quickly.That’s all I can think of right now. Really depends on what you are looking for: promotion speed, working under a particular leadership style, philosophy, comraderie in the troops, personal discretion and responsibility. Personally, I like the thinking behind the Cape Coral PD that results in a computer opening or splash page that announces, “LOBBY HOURS 24 HOURS A DAY 365 DAYS A YEAR’ Never seen yhat before.
