PDF Editor FAQ

Colin Kaepernick protested the Betsy Ross Flag on Nike new sneaker and they halted production, why do we allow a single sports figure to influence our national thinking?

Personally, I don’t think Nike making a product decision constitutes influence on “our national thinking.”YMMV.Kap is a Nike representative - my recollection is that he signed a sponsorship contract with them sometime after he left the 49ers - and his political activism gives him significant influence on Nike. Which is perfectly fine. They think he’ll help them sell sneakers, and they’re probably right. But let’s not overstate it. It’s not like he forced 330 million people to turn in their shoes!

What did Stephanie Vardavas do at Nike?

I was in the Nike legal department for 14 years, from 1997 until 2011.I was originally recruited as a Sports Marketing lawyer, on the basis of my prior experience representing Major League Baseball and negotiating sponsorship contracts (many of them with Nike) for athlete clients. But after a couple of years I was offered a chance to branch out a little bit and do some work that was more hands-on with regard to the products: product safety and product regulatory compliance. I started off doing just a little of this kind of work, perhaps ten percent of my practice. On the sports marketing side I worked primarily in tennis, golf, baseball, cycling, and Olympic sports, and a little bit in basketball and American football. I also did product supply / sponsorship contracts with a number of major universities, including North Carolina, Ohio State, and the U of Washington. But that part of my practice tapered down over the years as I got more and more into product safety. Over the years I ramped up until I had reached the point where I was spending 80% or 90% of my time on product safety and regulatory compliance, but I continued to work on a few sports marketing deals where I had the best relationships to keep things on track. For example, I lawyered Nike’s Lance Armstrong business for 12 years, including all the legal work to qualify the LIVESTRONG bracelet to be sold in all 50 states, and I was very close friends with Serena Williams’ attorney Keven Davis, and together he and I worked out several innovative deals that allowed Nike to own her exclusive rights with regard to performance athletic apparel, while also allowing her to spread her wings as a fashion designer, which she was very eager to do. Sadly, Keven died just before Christmas 2011. I still miss him a lot.During this time I also began to serve on the oversight committee for human experimentation in the Nike Sport Research Lab. This was a committee made up of a mixture of NSRL scientists, members of the community (including clergy), and me. We reviewed the ethical issues and protocols for all invasive research performed in the NSRL, sometimes recommended changes, and approved all protocols before the research could begin. I continued to serve on this committee until I left Nike.In May 2009 Nike went through a huge reorganization and laid off almost two thousand employees, including three trademark lawyers. My position as product safety counsel was downbanded and turned into a business job instead of a legal job. But I was asked to stay on and move into the Trademarks practice group, because I had some experience with trademarks when I worked at MLB (and a little when I was in the agent business). So for the next two years I worked with the Trademarks team to manage Nike’s and our subsidiaries’ global trademark portfolios. I managed the Nike brand in the EMEA region, co-managed it in North America, and oversaw a number of category and subsidiary trademark portfolios globally, including field sports, men’s athletic training, licensed team sports, golf, running, sportswear (lifestyle), digital sports, and sustainable business & innovation, plus Converse, Umbro, and SPARQ. I also oversaw product performance and sustainability claims and advertising. One of the most fun parts of my job during that period was reviewing the Nike Golf videos from “the Oven” facility in Fort Worth where they developed the golf equipment in those days. Even though Nike Golf is not in the equipment business anymore, many of the Oven videos are still viewable on YouTube.

Does Messi's 21-months sentence for tax fraud mean his career at Barcelona is over?

Of course not. He won't spend a minute in jail, since he can pay off everything he owes to the country. Messing is making around 40 million euros per season solely from his wage if we add all the sponsorship contracts, you can double that amount easily - therefore those millions he owes are "nothing" for him.He will probably get a probation for a year or two and repay the country. He will play for Barcelona and give us what we all strive for - a little bit of magic on the football fields!
