Okay, having been a professor for 15+ years and taught classes that range in size from 11 to 75, I can take a stab at answering this in a way that may be both demoralizing and heartening.When we are grading a pile of exams, we aren’t thinking about who we like and don’t like. We just want to get through the #$%@ stack quickly, and do it as fair and square as possible: partially for good karma and blah-blah-blah-ideals-for-why-we-got-into-teaching but also to frankly avoid the complications associated with whiners who come up after we’ve passed exams back, and whinge “my friend got the same thing wrong as I did and you gave her 3 of of 5 points and only gave me 2 points, and I want that extra point you gave her. Wah wah wah.”And if it’s a multi page exam, we only know who you are on the first page (which is mostly instructions and simple questions to see if you are actually not brain dead- the harder stuff is typically buried inside) unless your name is written on every page. Most of us grade page 1 first for all exams, then flip to page 2 and do them in a row and so on. So unless you are both sufficiently narcissistic and paranoid to assume we are going to take the extra time to say “oh, I wonder who has written page 3 of this exam, let me take extra time to flip and see…oh, it’s student X who gives his opinions so boldly in a manner threatens my authority so I must squelch him” then you can rest secure that we are working as speedily as possible and just trying to make it through as much of the stack we can until 5pm when we can have some booze.And don’t fool yourself that non-US universities have a layer of security. Having taught classes in Germany and France where names are hidden and it’s ID only, we can easily find out whose ID belongs to whom before we grade the exams. Not that we frankly give a flying-you-know-what about who may be who, but because we need to enter these grades as quickly and efficiently as possible into the grade books.Can you tell I’m about to grade a stack of exams many inches thick?
