I was passed over for a big promotion at work in favor of a less qualified individual. When I asked, my boss said it was because he needed me and couldn’t let me go. I am livid! What would you do?Wow, you’ve got a problem and one that is not going to go away. The bottom line is if you let this pass, you are doomed to never be promoted under this boss. Here’s the issue:The reality is that your boss thought they could pass you over and you wouldn’t do anything about it. If you teach them that they’re right, well they’ll do it over and over again.Your “boss” is just a manager and not a leader.Any manager that will hold you back for their needs is someone undeserving of your time or loyaltyWhat would I do?Update my resumeWork within my network in the company and apply for jobs under a different chain of managementIf that doesn’t work (IE the “boss” blocks me there too), then it’s time to put my resume out and get a new job at a different companyBottom line is that you have to stand up for yourself because no one else will. If you aren’t willing to show them that you are serious, well then you’re going to get what you get.Story Time:Much earlier in my career I was working as a Senior Project Manager for a large Oil and Gas company. The commodity market was high and the company was growing by leaps and bounds. The organization was working on maturing its processes and disciplines and had opened a number of management positions to form these areas. My leader at that time had responsibility to develop an IT Project Delivery team that would eventually evolve to be a full-blown Program Management Office (PMO). He discussed it with me at length as he had little experience in project management or in developing a PMO. He had me draw up the charter for the new department and even had me write the job description for the manager of the department. I was a perfect fit for the role, almost like it was written just for me.The job posted and I applied, of course my director was the hiring manager, so when interviews came around we just had lunch. I was a shoe-in, or so I thought. The IT VP called me into his office and asked me why I hadn’t applied to other manager postings, specifically the Enterprise Solutions Manager (ESM) position. I told him that I was already deeply involved in forming the IT Project Delivery department and while I had read the ESM job description I didn’t think the job was well defined and was concerned that the next time the business slowed, the position would be the first to be cut.The VP tried his best to put lipstick on the pig about how important the role and department was to the future of the whole company. He wanted me to book time with the director and have a serious conversation about what the position was really all about. So I did.The meeting didn’t go very well. The job posting wasn’t well defined because the director hadn’t formed any vision for the department and hadn’t even started developing a charter. Over the hour-long meeting he tried to convince me every way possible that the job would be so spectacular that I’d be kicking myself if I didn’t take the role. (Take the role? I hadn’t even applied for it.) I wrapped up the meeting by thanking the director for the time, but I didn’t feel the position was for me.Within the hour I got a call from a HR specialist asking me if I wanted update my internal resume before it was submitted for the ESM position. I was shocked, I hadn’t applied for the job and didn’t intend to. The HR specialist didn’t know what to do, he said that the VP had called up wanting a copy of my internal resume because he said I had applied. I said no, I’m not interested in the job and won’t be applying. (An important note is that at this company you could only apply to one position at a time, so by applying for the ESM position I was withdrawing my application to head up the IT Project Delivery department.)Shortly there after I’m back in the VP’s office and he wants to know why I’m refusing to apply for the ESM position. I laid out exactly my concerns over the lack of vision and charter. He asked me what I was going to do if I didn’t get the IT Project Delivery job. I told him that I’d continue on as a Senior PM until I found another job internally or externally.I got the job.As I predicted, the commodity market dropped a year later and the ESM team was all but disbanded. Some on the team got other roles in the company, but the majority were let go.
