PDF Editor FAQ
What’s the strangest thing a car salesman has said to you during negotiation?
I was buying my college-aged daughter a CPO Subaru to replace her VW Beetle. The Beetle had served her well through high school, but was breaking down frequently. Not to mention slipping in snow and ice in the harsh wintery weather of her adopted Rocky Mountain college town.As we were finalizing the paperwork, the salesman said, “Oh you’re going to love this car, they’re very popular with lesbians.”Stunned, we both looked at each other and then back at the salesman. My daughter said, “Excuse me?”Salesman: “Oh, well, what I meant was that these are rugged cars and popular with ‘outdoorsy’ people, nothing in particular about you.” But he said this while he glanced at her Birkenstocks. We could see he was mentally scrambling for a way to extricate himself. My daughter said, “…But why would you even say that? Do you really think Subarus and Birkenstocks automatically identify women as such?”He mumbled and back-pedaled some more as he clumsily organized the stack of paperwork.I enjoyed watching him squirm as my daughter put him on the spot. We honestly couldn’t care less if he really thought that but we still get a laugh about his comment, and watching him squirm!
I'm 15 and I'm interested in becoming a commercial pilot. What are the steps I should start taking to become a commercial pilot in the future?
There are a couple of routes you can take. You can begin by getting your private pilot's license and then continuing toward a commercial multi-engine rating. Or, after high school, apply to schools such as the University of North Dakota, Emery Riddle, or in Montana, Rocky Mountain College. Many these schools work with airlines for internships. Or, in order to get hours, once you graduate, you can apply for a commission in the military and train to fly transports. If you end up flying attack or fighters, not to worry as most have two engines which will give you hours in multi-engine, jets. Most of the pilots I know, who fly commercial, are fighter and attack jocks.Visit with your school guidance counselor. Hope this helps.
Is this the life you really want?
Pretty much.I live in a small rural town in the Rocky Mountains, and teach Physics, Math, and Astronomy at a community college of less than 2000 students. Single; no kids. Not a dazzlingly exciting life by any means. I’m sure many (most?) people would look upon me as a pitiful bluestocking in the boonies. But I spend my time doing things that are deeply meaningful to me - my academic work, cultural activities, being an advisor to the multicultural club at my college, playing classical piano, traveling once in a while, etc. And I have a few good friends, going back to sixth grade. My pay, and therefore material belongings, are very modest. But I have warmth during the cold months, a comfortable bed on which to read, and sleep 7–8 hours every night my own schedule. I feel safe in my surroundings. I’ll never compromise my circumstances for a more conventionally impressive life, if it means I’ll be thwarted from doing stuff that give my life meaning and purpose. And this is not a “sour grapes” kind of statement. I grew up in a pretty comfortable environment, and saw how exterior dazzle in itself doesn’t make people happy. So although I appreciate having had those comforts and privileges during my formative years, I know what is most in tune with my authenticity.
