You need to apply for "cross-registration" in the business school. Here are the instructions. Non-Business School students may take no more than 6 credits of business courses per semester and no more than twelve credits during their entire Columbia course of study.A list of Summer 2012 MBA courses that may be available can be found here. Summer 2012 full-term and A-term Business School courses begin on May 21. B-term courses begin July 2.All prerequisites will be enforced. Note: B6302 - Capital Markets & Investments is a prerequisite for most finance courses. IEOR E4721 Global Capital Markets and B6302 Capital Markets taken at the School of Engineering, or U6023 Capital Markets taken at SIPA, will be accepted as a substitute for the Business School's B6302 Capital Markets prerequisite. Also, SIPA's U6045 International Capital Markets and U6022 Economics of Finance taken together fulfill the Business School's prerequisite of B6302 Capital Markets. For Business School courses that list B6302 Capital Markets as a corequisite, one class (U6045 or U6022) should have been already taken and the other class should be taken concurrently with the B-School class requiring the B6302 Capital markets corequisite. All other stated prerequisites have to have been taken at the Business School. Instructors may not waive these prerequisites. Students who feel they have the appropriate background may take the Capital Markets exemption exam, which will be offered on May 20 and 21, 2012. I enjoyed my cross-registration at Harvard, as I went to the school down the street.So let’s see, both MIT and Harvard do count as elite schools (and my followers will remember while I got the application from Harvard and my letters of recommendation got sent in, I didn’t complete the application — I figured out I really wanted to go to MIT). But cross-registration gave me both :)Materials: Depth, Pace, and QuantityI also evaluated various programs (UBC, University of Toronto, McGill, Waterloo in Canada, and a few others). As you may expect, “What MIT teaches and requires in four years, UBC would do in 6 years.” (Most majors require a research-based thesis.)Many people describe the MIT education as “drinking from a firehose.”Classmates:At elite schools, you are going to run into amazingly accomplished people. The accomplishments are going to greatly vary.At a place like MIT, you have quantifiably the top of the top in the world in STEM.As I mentioned on other answers, I compiled these:Americans, Class of 2022 and Significant DistinctionsAny summary for class of 2023?I could do the same for the International Mathematical Olympiad:You’re in classes with some of the top of the top (quantifiably).Alumni — when ask them what do they most regret or what would they do differently?Usually you hear answers like “I wish I had more time to spend in getting to know my amazing classmates.”Other elite schools have amazing classmates of other types — like future leaders of the world.The flip side of this is that elite schools are NOT better for everyone. If you don’t have the right fit (and academic is one of the criteria), then no, elite schools are bad for you.I had one interviewee who took nothing beyond two years of high school science. It’s too much of mountain to climb to get to Calculus-based Physics if you haven’t run into the same concepts in Algebra (and Trigonometry) forms.I would say for a lot of these schools, you do have a good idea what you want to study / major in, and have narrowed it down to a small number of fields.OpportunitiesAt elite schools, you get opportunities to get to know top professors in their field and do things like research.Now, I didn’t go to schools like Stanford or Princeton, but I have visited. We’re talking some serious facilities!
