PDF Editor FAQ

Can a good hacker track my IP address and my location from my answer on Quora, even though I answered it anonymously? How easy would it be for them to hack? How secure are Quora's servers compared to other giant sites?

A "hacker"? Well, they would need to access Quora's internal log files, which is very unlikely. So let's rephrase this:Can someone who knows only my IP address determine who I am and my location?Let me tell you a little story.About three months ago, somebody attempted a DoS attack on a web site we controlled.Within an hour, we knew the IP address of the mastermind.Within 2 hours, we knew a lot about that IP address, including the subscriber name. We had her land line number, and two cell numbers (including a burner!). We knew the fact that she worked a side job under an assumed name. Due to some very careless registrations, we knew exactly where she lived (which looked almost like this):Within 3 hours we were having a full and frank discussion about whether we would be calling the FBI on her son.We did all of this with no cooperation from the ISP, no cooperation from any cell provider, and no special tools, just using information we already knew, variously publicly-available data, and a few good guesses.Because this answer has gotten a fair bit of interest and upvoting, I'll add some more details for those who are interested.First, the "hacking" side of the question (which to be fair I did not really answer). The OP asks "Can a good hacker track my IP address and my location from my answer on Quora even though I answered it anonymously? How easy would it be for them to hack? How secure are Quora's server compared to other giant sites?"Which we can break down as follows:Is it possible to tell what real account posted an Anon answer? Is it possible to tell what IP address was used to post that answer?Given the IP address, can we figure who the real person is?Which of these actions could be performed by a "hacker".Questions 1 and 2 are trivial: yes, Quora certainly knows exactly which account has been used to make every post. And yes, Quora certainly tracks the IP address used on every hit.Question 3 I address in my original answer.Question 4 is the real question. What are the chances of a "hacker" doing steps 1 and 2? My professional but completely unofficial opinion is that it is very unlikely indeed. First, this information is relatively secure even inside of Quora. Only a small handful of people will have access to Anon identities, and even fewer will have full unfettered access to server logs. The set of software that Quora is built on (what we call the stack) is mature, well tested software that is used in many, many other secure systems.Add to this the fact that you would typically require two independent attacks to access both the database (where anon mapping is stored) and the server logs (which will hold the full IP address logs). So again, my completely unofficial opinion is that this is exceptionally unlikely.Second, people want to know the backstory. The hacking was being done by her son, a high school student. She was unaware of what was happening. We are now mentoring the son and trying to make sure his talents (which he definitely has) are being productively deployed. And for all you young(ish) people reading this: almost all forms of Denial of Service are criminal offenses. If you are caught, you can and will be convicted. A conviction like this will effectively ban you working in any software-related job for life.If you really want to have fun hacking, fire up your own server and see if you can hack into that. If you can, then publish your information in reputable locations.Third, how were we able to get this information? This is something that everyone on the Internet should understand. Each and every computer on the Internet is uniquely identified by a collection of four 3 digit numbers, something like 123.45.67.89, called an Internet Protocol Address or IP Address. Every single time you access any web page, that number is shipped along with your request. It has to be, because that's how the web server ships the page back to you. That number, as I said, is unique (although if you are on a home network or a public network like a Starbucks, all of the devices on the network share the same IP address).Back in the day, IP addresses were typically handed out when you connected to the Internet via modem. But now, with DSL and cable modems, your IP address almost never changes. So, here's the thing: since servers keep logs, it is relatively trivial to search for all activity that has happened on that server from a particular IP address like 123.45.67.89. And while our hacker may not have ever accessed the server, perhaps someone else from that IP address has. Aha! This allows us to tie that IP address to other data that we have. Say, your user ID.So, here's another thing to think about. You can also check to see if any other sites that you have access to have this IP in the logs. You know, a quick phone call to a friend at Company X saying "Hey, any chance if you can tell me if 123.45.67.89 has ever accessed your site?" All unofficial, of course. Now, let's supposed you registered on the site. You supplied a user ID and an email address. Say Hacrron999 and [email protected]. Have you ever used that user ID before? Have you every used it on a discussion site? Does that site also put the user ID in the signature line? People tend to re-use the same user IDs and passwords. Just sayin'.Boom. Google finds that for me. I now know everything you have posted on that legit site. Since that was a legit site, you have probably been pretty free with your information. Maybe you posted a link to your Facebook or Twitter page. Maybe those have identifying information. Maybe from those profiles I can glean your real name.Once I have your real name, especially if it is an unusual name, I can start searching for that. You've be surprised at the number of places your real name shows up. Trademark registrations. Tax rolls. Domain registrations. Court cases. And then searching on the information that turns up there finds even more information. All this from an IP address. And here's the key -- I can find this even if the hacker was not the one leaving the trail of breadcrumbs.Fourth, could you avoid all of this? Sure. You could use a number of tools to obscure your IP address. Effectively, you use an intermediate service which forwards your request with a different IP address. Now, this will render you safe from average people like me, but you are then trusting that the intermediate server is itself secure. With more resources (e.g. the NSA), even this level of security is circumventable. So what's the truly most secure method? To have no connection between you and the IP address. How does a hacker do that? By stealing a Wi-Fi connection. This way, even if the IP address is compromised, the owner of the IP address has (literally) no idea who the hacker is. In fact, the subscriber can end up getting the blame. This is why you should always ensure that you have secure passwords on your wireless networks. And lest you think that I am making this risk up, read the following story, which happened right here in Canada two years ago: Donnie Snook investigation: Hunt for unknown sexual predator took Toronto police 22 months | Toronto Star and Former New Brunswick city councillor gets 18 years for sexually abusing boys | Toronto Star.
