Unlike the US’ CIA or Britain’s MI6, RAW reports directly to the prime minister instead of the Ministry of Defense. The chief of RAW is designated secretary (research) in the Cabinet Secretariat, which is part of the prime minister’s office. This same provision keeps it out of reach of the Right To Information (RTI) act.RAW History:Until 1968, the Intelligence Bureau (IB), which is responsible for India's internal intelligence, also handled external intelligence. But after India's miserable performance in a 1962 border war with China, the need for a separate external intelligence agency was clear. During that conflict,"our intelligence failed to detect Chinese build up for the attack,"writes Maj. Gen. VK Singh, a retired army officer who did a stint in RAW, in his 2007 book, India's External Intelligence: Secrets of Research and Analysis Wing.As a result, India established a dedicated external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Founded mainly to focus on China and Pakistan, over the last forty years the organization has expanded its mandate and is credited with greatly increasing India's influence abroad. Experts say RAW's powers and its role in India's foreign policy have varied under different prime ministers. RAW claims that it contributed to several foreign policy successes:the creation of Bangladesh in 1971;India's growing influence in Afghanistan;the northeast state of Sikkim's accession to India in 1975;the security of India's nuclear program;the success of African liberation movements during the Cold War.How to Join RAW?Now, RAW has its own service cadre, the RAW Allied Service (RAS) to absorb talent. Recruitment is mostly by deputation from the Armed Forces or Civil Service Officers.Most of the Directors have been officers from the IPS. Officers are also deputed from the Indian Revenue Service RAW also employs a number of linguists and other experts in various fields. Recruitment in RAW is taken in the name of NATI (National Aptitude Test in Intelligence) followed by personality and psychological test and interviews.Delhi-based security think tank Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses noted in one of its reports that RAW suffered from the ‘tail-end syndrome’ where the ‘bottom of the entrance lists’ of those appearing for the UPSC examinations were offered jobs.1. Recruitment of Director in RAWMost of the directors are from Indian Police Services (IPS) and other first grade services. A candidate who is already working as a Grade 1 officer in government departments such as armed forces, intelligence agencies etc. may be deputed as a RAW officer. Its better to enter RAW through IPS..!Now, I am providing you the basic eligibility criteria for a RAW agent through Civil Service (IPS) entry. First try to get top rank in Civil Service Exam and then opt for IPS position. After that, the RAW agency will choose the top IPS officers for the interview (it must be noted here that the number of candidates will be solely decided by RAW Panel). They will also check the past background of the IPS candidates.#Way 2: You can join through Armed Forces Army, Airforce, Navy n all the other special forces in it.#Way 3: Through Civil Services like IPS, IFS and so on.. There's a basic training, and there's an advanced training.The basic training generally lasts no longer than 10 days where the trainees are familiarized with the real world of intelligence and espionage (all that the movies tell us is absolute bull). Financial and economic analysis, space technology, information security, energy security and scientific knowledge is given to the trainees. The recruit is made to specialize in a foreign language and are introduced to geo strategic analysis. Case studies of other agencies like CIA, KGB, ISI, Mossad and MI6 are presented for study. The inductee is also taught that intelligence organisations do not identify who is a friend and who is a foe; the country's foreign policy does.After completing 'Basic Training', the recruit is sent to a Field Intelligence Bureau (FIB). His/her training here lasts for 1–2 years where they are given given firsthand experience of what it was to be out in the figurative cold, conducting clandestine operations. During night exercises under realistic conditions, he/she is taught infiltration and ex-filtration. They are also taught how to avoid capture and if caught, how to face interrogation. He/she learns the art of reconnoitre (aka Reki in Hindi), making contacts, and the numerous skills of operating an intelligence mission.
