I graduated magna cum laude on Sunday with my bachelor of science degree in interdisciplinary studies with English as a second language supplemental.Selfie with my sister!

When was the first time you truly understood the concept of privilege?

I was born into a low socioeconomic family. Living under the poverty line with “undocumented income” and with a teenage mom. After a few illegal incidents and near misses that would have ended up in me going missing at a young age I ended up in foster care. After a few years I was adopted into a middle class Caucasian family. My father was a pastor and my mother homeschooled the kids. My brother and I were taken in and loved dearly.I realized when I was a teenager that I was privileged because I read about the other foster kids like myself who weren’t adopted. It is a privilege to be adopted into a family where you are loved and cared for.Although sometimes adoption isn’t a privilege when the situation is abusive or unhealthy.I realized though that my adoption into a family that took the time to care for my needs was privilege. My family helped me understand my brokennesses and come to the point where I could graduate college. In December I will be graduating with my bachelors of science in interdisciplinary studies (education). Foster kids like I was don’t graduate college. Less than 5% do and so I consider myself privileged to have been removed from a sad situation to a family where I can succeed. Where my mother and father were both present in my life everyday. That is one aspect of privilege I’ve seen in my life.

What is the academic highlight of your life?

It’s time for some academic bragging. If you don’t want to read about my multiple achievements then keep scrolling.Perhaps my biggest academic highlight of my life has been my almost completion of my bachelors degree. I will graduate in December with a bachelor of science in interdisciplinary studies. I will be part of the 2.5% of children who were in foster care to obtain a bachelors degree before the age of 25.I made the dean’s list 3 semesters in a row at my current university with a current GPA of a 3.9I was in the honors college at another university and received scholarship for that.I was on the dean’s list at my community college while I was in high school.I had my research recognized by multiple dean’s of different colleges at my current university. They stood and clapped for me as I received a certificate in honor of my research.I have had my research on special education recommended for publishing at another university by a Dr of special education.I will graduate with a bachelors degree with honors assuming I don’t screw up my internship I am in right now and debt free.ALL of this was made possible by mama who homeschooled me all the way from Kindergarten through high school.Mama was told I wouldn’t be successful and I would struggle in school. Yes I struggled and I worked very hard to be where I am right now. It didn’t come easily to me but I am really fortunate to be where I am today. My goal is to be Dr. Bauer when I grow up.
