What is the USMLE? When should an MBBS student start preparing for the exam? Which are the best resources?

USMLE is kind of an entrance exam to get into a residency program after MBBS in the USA. It is a 3 step examination. Step 1 is theory based exam which includes the syllabus of 1st and 2nd year. 2nd step has 2 parts CS and CK. One is the clinic based practical exam and another is mcq exam. 3rd step is actually given once you enter the residency. It's also clinic based practical exam. For step 1, most of the students start preparing from 2nd year onwards. And for further steps, once they clear the step 1.I had digged out some information regarding the resources, which are as follows:Pathoma videosKaplan videosFirst Aid. This is the most important book I have heard about.U World ( Thank you Nikhil Gupta for this)I actually don't know much about other resources. Those who know about it more, please mention in the comment section.Thank you!

How good is BRS physiology for USMLE Step 1?

Hello! This is a great question. Many people, like myself, faced similar questions when we started studying for USMLE Step 1. There are so many resources out there competing for your money and attention. What is the most high-yield and useful for Step 1 preparation?USMLE Step 1 is an exam that tests a specific set of basic science medical knowledge and key clinical associations. First Aid does a good job summarizing and simplifying all the materials that will appear on the Step 1 exam. If you want supplemental materials in addition to FA, I would not recommend BRS book series for Step 1 studying (that being said, they can be useful when you are studying for exams during 1st and 2nd year of medical school).BRS Physiology, in my opinion, goes into way too much detail and it will take a lot of your time to digest everything in the book. When you only have limited amount of time to spend on USMLE Step 1 studying, it is often better to focus your energy and attention elsewhere. If you are particularly weak on physiology, I would suggest Physeo, a set of videos focused on physiology - sort of like Pathoma for pathology-related information. They tend to focus on high-yield information pertinent to the USMLE Step 1 and presents topics in a way easy for students to understand. Plus, they are very affordable!Hope this helps and best of luck!

How do I prepare for the USMLE step 1 during my 2nd year of MBBS?

Thanks for the A2A!I strongly believe that the foundation of success in Step 1 begins long before the dedicated study period and lies in the first two years of medical school. Kudos to you for thinking about USMLE Step 1 this early in the game!Once decided that you want to start studying for Step 1 during your first year of medical school, the logical next question is “How do I efficiently balance studying for Step 1 with coursework?”. My advice is to treat studying for Step 1 as part and parcel with studying for your classes. Regardless of which medical school you are attending, there is a lot of overlaps between classes and USMLE materials. While schools may only test you on rote memorization of facts and lecture materials, USMLE Step 1 will take it one step further to test you on the integration and application of the same information. Several resources are available to you to enhance understanding of course materials and help integrating them into USMLE Step 1 studying:First Aid: The gold standard of all prep books as it covers almost everything you need to know for USMLE Step 1. Though it is often intimidating and foreign for many first- or second-year medical student to look through it, it distills the high-yield facts in a concise and clear manner for all the things you have learned in class. This is a great companion for first-year coursework as well as early Step 1 studying. A new edition of First Aid is published yearly in January, which is the perfect time to purchase one and start reviewing the organ systems you have learned while previewing the ones you are going to study.Anki: This is a software used for creating electronic flashcards. Though ready-made cards targeting Step 1 high-yield information are available for purchase (e.g. Firecracker), I found that long-term retention is often improved when you make these flashcards yourself. Anki allows you to create flashcards of important topics and study with the power of spaced repetition. This will not only help with retaining pertinent information for USMEL Step 1 but also with memorizing facts for your classes. Most importantly, you can load the app into your phone and study on-the-go like a pro!Pathoma: Like its name suggests, it is a book/video series for learning the mechanisms and major concepts of pathology. However, if your school does not start teaching pathology until year 2 or 3, it may not be of much use to you until then.Of course, there are many other products out there competing for you attention and money. These are the few that we think are the most relevant and useful to those of you who are thinking about Step 1 during first-year.Hope this helps and best of luck!
